Things to do in Nanning
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nanning
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Warm and flowery, with bauhinia across the city and the Sanyuesan festival. Prime months for the city itself.
Heat and humidity build, still workable with early starts as the rains that fill Detian begin.
Hottest and wettest. City sightseeing is a morning and evening sport, but Detian is at full flow, best July to September.
Best overall window, warm, drier and clearer. Late October is the pick for a combined city and excursion trip.
Coolest and driest, comfortable for the city and golf, but Detian runs thin and Chinese New Year disrupts travel.

Is Nanning safe?
- Normal big city awareness suffices in all three recommended base areas, which stay busy and lit late.
- Manage subtropical heat with morning and evening sightseeing from May to September, and expect sudden wet season rain.
- Paths at Detian, Tongling and Daming get slippery after rain, so wear proper footwear.
- At Longhu Mountain, do not feed the macaques and keep food and loose bags secured.
Nanning travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Gate area prices at Detian run high and its food is weak, so eat in Shuolong town or carry snacks.
- Agree a price before cooking at any market stall without displayed prices, especially weigh and pay seafood.
- Sanjie Liangxiang by day is a shadow of its night self, and Yangmei Ancient Town is pleasant but modest.
- Do not treat Guilin and Yangshuo as a Nanning day trip. Give them their own nights.
Getting around Nanning: public transport and more
- The five line metro covers the centre, Qingxiu, both main stations and Wuxiang for a few yuan.
- Use Nanning East for high speed trains to Guilin, Yangshuo and Chongzuo, and keep destinations in Chinese characters for DiDi and taxis.
- Wuxu Airport is about 32 km southwest, so allow an hour by bus, train or car.
- For Detian, Longhu and Daming, book a private car through your hotel or a platform, as public transport is impractical.
