Mount Tai travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Labour Day and National Day weeks push daily visitors past 80,000, with cableway queues from two hours. Move any dates that touch them.
- Buy sticks, ponchos, gloves and snacks in Tai'an. Water rises from about CNY 2 at Red Gate to about CNY 10 near the top.
- The Beijing day trip dash with cable cars both ways technically visits Mount Tai and satisfies nobody. Base in Tai'an.
Getting around Mount Tai: public transport and more
- Arrive at Tai'an Station for high speed trains or Taishan Station for ordinary trains in town, and do not confuse the two when booking.
- The mountain runs on four gates, shuttles and cableways. No cableway runs at night, so the night climb is on foot.
- Google Maps is unreliable in mainland China. Carry sight and hotel names in Chinese characters and set up phone payment before arrival.
