Things to do in Mount Mulanje
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mount Mulanje
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season, the best window for Sapitwa and traverses, with near freezing hut nights and misty spells in June and July.
Hot dry season, still good climbing and the clearest summit mornings, with the Chambe face window running to about October.
Shoulder weeks, lush and quiet with waterfalls full, at the price of weather that can still cancel a summit day.
Core rains. Slippery granite, risen streams and days of cloud. Treat the upper mountain as closed for visitor planning.
What's on
- Independence Day 6 July
A national holiday in the best climbing window. Forestry offices and banks close or run short hours, so settle registration, fees and cash before it.

Where to stay in Mount Mulanje

the trek itself, huts only
Every sleep above the foothills is a shared basic hut with a fireplace and no food, booked via the Forestry Office or InfoMulanje.
Likhubula

The trailhead settlement ten kilometres from town, where registration, guides and porters are, with two simple bases.
Mulanje town and the tea side
provisioning, recovery nights and the Ruo route
The Boma and Chitakale hold the shops, InfoMulanje and the better beds, and Lujeri bases the rainforest side.
Think twice about
- Upper Mount Mulanje in the rainy season
From about November to April, and December to March above all, wet granite, risen streams and days of cloud make Sapitwa and the traverses a risk exercise. Plan the upper mountain in the dry season.
- Mulanje town and Chitakale on foot after dark
A violent assault and robbery of tourists in a Mulanje hotel was recorded in 2025, and streets are unsafe after dark. Stay in a guarded lodge and ride door to door at night.
- Chambe West Face in the wet season
In the November to April rains water cascades down the face and most routes are too wet to climb. The climbing window is May to October.

Mount Mulanje travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The two day Sapitwa promise, freelance guiding hired away from the Forestry Office, and assuming the Mountain Club hut storeroom is open to non members.
- Buying mountain food at Likhubula, where there is no real store. Buy in Blantyre, Mulanje town or Chitakale and check it against a list.
- Planning Sapitwa or a traverse into the core rains for lower prices. In December to March treat the upper mountain as closed for planning.
