Things to do in Blantyre
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Blantyre
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season, the best window for Mulanje and Zomba hiking and for game concentration in Majete and Lengwe.
Hot dry season, strong game viewing and dawn start hiking, with serious lowland heat.
Rainy season, lush and good for birding but slippery on Mulanje, with deteriorating unpaved roads and higher malaria risk.

Think twice about
- Bus station blocks in Blantyre and Limbe after dark
Crowded transport hubs where pickpocketing concentrates, and not areas to walk or base in at night.
- Limbe town centre as a base
Fine to pass through by day with a driver, but there's no stay there we'd recommend.
- Unlit township and rural roads after dark
Citywide caution after dark, plus livestock, potholes and unlit vehicles on rural roads.

Is Blantyre safe?
- Violent crime, including break-ins, is a risk in Blantyre and Limbe, and a tourist group was assaulted in Mulanje in 2025: do not walk after dark, and get Mountain Club of Malawi security advice before climbing Mulanje.
- Do not walk after dark anywhere in Blantyre or Limbe, avoid demonstrations, and do not resist a robbery.
- Malaria occurs year round in the south, highest in the lowlands and after the rains, so take prophylaxis and evacuation insurance.
Blantyre travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Padding the city instead of taking the excursions, which are the substance of a Blantyre trip.
- Day tripping Lake Malawi, climbing Mulanje unguided or in the rains, and changing money on the street.
- Self driving Majete on a first visit when reserve guides know where the wildlife has been.
Getting around Blantyre: public transport and more
- Walk the central cluster by day and ride everything after dark, using hotel arranged taxis with fares agreed in advance.
- Hire a vehicle with a driver for Mulanje, Zomba, Thyolo, Majete and Lengwe, and start every excursion on a full tank.
- Chileka airport is about 16km from the centre, and the southern lakeshore is three to four hours away, not a day trip.
