Things to do in Mount Kenya
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mount Kenya
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
First dry season. Dry trails and clear mornings, with the Nelion technical season running mid-December to mid-March.
Long rains. Mud, cloud and wet huts make this the window to avoid for a summit trek.
Second dry season and the main trekking season, with Batian in condition and September to early October driest and quieter.
Short rains. Wet trails and uncertain views make November the other month to avoid for a summit.
The mountain dries, the Nelion season opens mid-month, and the Christmas period is busy.
What's on
- 10 to 4 Mountain Bike Challenge February
A Mount Kenya Trust fundraiser descending the northern slopes, filling Nanyuki beds for a weekend.
- Lewa Safari Marathon June
The conservation marathon at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, pairing with a Lewa or Ngare Ndare day, not a summit week.
Best things to do in Mount Kenya
Point Lenana
The 4,985 m trekking summit, reached before dawn beside the Lewis Glacier with Batian and Nelion beside you.
Lake Ellis
A calm moorland lake on the Chogoria route, a high camp with the main peaks on the horizon.
Lake Michaelson
A deep tarn below the Temple cliff in the Gorges Valley, the most beautiful lake on Mount Kenya.
Gorges Valley
The great Chogoria descent valley of tarns, giant groundsels and long views back to the summits.
Nithi Falls
A waterfall detour on the Nithi River near the Chogoria road head camp, about a kilometre from camp.
Peak Circuit Path
The rough high path circling the main peaks, best used in part as a walk high, sleep low acclimatisation day.
Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy
A bongo breeding conservancy and animal orphanage by the Fairmont, the best low altitude wildlife visit here.
Equator Marker
The equator sign south of Nanyuki, a half hour ritual stop on almost every trek transfer to Sirimon Gate.
Where to stay in Mount Kenya
On the mountain
the trek itself, huts and bandas only
Every sleep above the gates is basic bunk or tent accommodation, and sleeping altitude drives acclimatisation.
Nanyuki
main gateway, Sirimon Gate and Ol Pejeta
The best serviced base town, about 1,950 m, with the full spread from the Fairmont to budget town hotels.
Other gateways and slopes
Naro Moru route, southern forest and remote splurges
Route lodges and forest lodges on the other sides of the mountain, plus altitude cabins on the northern slopes.
Think twice about
- Timau, Burguret and Kamweti minor routes
Older routes in poor repair needing strong navigation and stamina. Use only as a guided, warden notified plan, never as a DIY shortcut.
- Serena Mountain Lodge site, western slopes
The old tree lodge has been closed for years with no confirmed reopening. Do not build an itinerary on it.
Best restaurants in Mount Kenya
Tusks Restaurant
The Fairmont's terrace restaurant facing the gardens, the obvious celebration dinner after a summit.
Le Rustique Restaurant
Nanyuki's garden restaurant favourite, with grills, pizzas and desserts people make a trip for.
Trout Tree Restaurant
A daytime restaurant in a huge fig tree above its own trout ponds, serving trout many ways.
Cape Chestnut
A family garden cafe restaurant in Nanyuki, the best slow daytime table before or after a trek.
Kongoni Camp
A camp restaurant in Nanyuki known for Italian dishes and a relaxed bush garden setting.
Morani's Restaurant
The lunch stop at the Morani centre inside Ol Pejeta, exactly where a full game drive day needs one.
Java House
The reliable chain coffee house at Cedar Mall for team breakfasts, coffee and a predictable cheap meal.
Outdoor things to do in Mount Kenya
Batian
Kenya's true 5,199 m summit, a long multi-pitch north face rock climb for experienced mountaineers only.
Nelion
The 5,188 m second summit, a full roped climb best from the south-east in the December to March season.
Ngare Ndare Forest
Indigenous forest with a canopy walk, ranger led trails and blue pools for swimming in the dry season.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
A Big Five day safari from Nanyuki with a major rhino sanctuary and Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
A model private conservancy famous for rhino and Grevy's zebra, quieter and more exclusive than Ol Pejeta.
Solio Game Reserve
A rhino sanctuary between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares where rhino are seen in remarkable numbers.
Best hotels in Mount Kenya
Old Moses Camp
The first Sirimon hut camp at 3,300 m, whose real job on the classic traverse is acclimatisation.
Shipton's Camp
The high camp at 4,200 m under the main peaks, base for Lenana, the Hausberg walk and Batian.
Mackinder's Camp
The large, famously cold hut camp at 4,200 m in the Teleki Valley on the Naro Moru route.
Austrian Hut
The highest hut at about 4,790 m, a staging tool for acclimatised parties, not a shortcut.
Minto's Hut
A small hut above Lake Michaelson, the Chogoria high camp for a Lenana push via Simba Col.
Meru Mount Kenya Bandas
Self catering bandas at Chogoria Gate, famous on traverses for a hot shower on the last mountain night.
Met Station
Bandas and bunkhouses at 3,050 m at the forest top, the first night on the Naro Moru route.
Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club
The historic safari club on 100 acres below the mountain, the splurge bookend before or after a trek.
Is Mount Kenya expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | KES 9,000 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | KES 22,000 a person |
| Splurge | KES 55,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room

- Gorges Valley: weeks ahead
- Peak Circuit Path: weeks ahead
- Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy: a few days ahead
- Mau Mau Caves: a few days ahead

- Book treks, crews and huts weeks ahead in the June to October and January to February dry seasons.
- KWS entry from 1 October 2025 is US$70 per day for a non-resident adult, KES 1,100 for a resident and KES 800 for an East African citizen.
- Book Lewa day access and Ngare Ndare ranger slots in advance. Neither is a reliable walk-up.
Is Mount Kenya safe?
- Altitude illness is the headline risk. Walk high, sleep low on an acclimatisation day, and descend at once for worsening symptoms.
- No alcohol high on the mountain, and take insurance that explicitly covers trekking to 5,000 m and evacuation.
- The high mountain is above the malaria zone and Nanyuki is low risk, but lower safari extensions change the advice. Ask a clinician.
Mount Kenya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The three day Naro Moru summit is the biggest trap. Without recent nights above 3,500 m, do not buy it.
- Do not plan around the closed Serena Mountain Lodge, however many old listings still show it open.
- A cheap trek is often cheap because its porters are under-equipped and underpaid. Ask about crew kit and food.
Getting around Mount Kenya: public transport and more
- Nairobi to Nanyuki or Naro Moru is about three to four hours by road, or about 45 minutes by flight to Nanyuki airstrip.
- Sleep in a gateway town on day one and start the summit profile the next day, not the same afternoon.
- Buy and hire everything in Nanyuki, Naro Moru or Chogoria town. There is nothing to buy above the gates.
