Things to do in Kisumu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kisumu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season. Best trails, roads and sunsets, and the first choice window for Ndere and Kakamega.
Short dry season. Warm and generally dry, with the Piny Luo Festival in late December in its Kisumu years.
Shoulder months. Greener and good for birds, with afternoon rain increasingly likely and muddier trails.
Wettest months, with April and May the long rains. Slippery trails, a rougher lake and the hardest day trip conditions.
What's on

Best things to do in Kisumu
Kisumu Museum
The city primer, with Luo culture galleries, lake fish aquaria, snakes and a full traditional homestead outdoors.
Kisumu Impala Sanctuary
A lakeside walk among free roaming impala and zebras, with hippos on the shore and picnic lawns for sundowners.
Dunga Beach Boat Safaris
Boat trips from Dunga into the Winam Gulf for hippos, fish eagles and papyrus birds, calmest early in the morning.
Dunga Beach
A working fishing beach where boats land tilapia, stalls fry it, and Kisumu daily life runs in the open air.
Hippo Point
The open lakeshore for Kisumu sunsets over the Winam Gulf, with hippos as a bonus rather than a promise.
Kibuye Market
One of western Kenya largest open air markets, best on a morning walk for produce, dried fish and everyday life.
Kisumu Clock Tower

Where to stay in Kisumu
Milimani
first visit, comfort and quiet nights
Leafy residential quarter between the centre and the lake, with most of the best hotels and the calmest streets.
Dunga lakeshore
lake character and sunsets
Atmospheric lakeside stays by the fishing village, a short ride from town, with boats and fish restaurants at hand.
Riat
resort escape and conferences
Cooler, elevated grounds out of town where the hotel itself is the product and a car is part of the plan.
West Kajulu hills
budget and long stays
Peaceful elevated backpacker base west of the centre, cheap and homely, reached by boda or taxi rather than on foot.
Think twice about
- Central bus park and immediate CBD core
The loudest and most hustled quarter, with transit hotels and an emptied, dark walk home at night. Sleep in Milimani instead.
- Nyalenda and Manyatta as an unconnected base
Dense low income residential areas with no visitor infrastructure, poor lighting and drainage, and petty crime risk for visitors alone.
- Unlit lakeshore south of Dunga at night
Dark shore roads with fast bodas and hippos moving at night make walking back after dark a poor plan. Taxi door to door.
- Kondele junction during demonstrations
A known gathering point when protests occur. Reroute and stay away on protest days rather than passing through to watch.

Is Kisumu safe?
- Kenya's high-risk carve-outs are the border and coastal areas, not Kisumu or the lake region.
- Travel restrictions cover only the Somalia border and northern coast areas; there is no restriction on Kisumu or western Kenya.
- Never swim in Lake Victoria at Kisumu due to pollution, bilharzia risk, hyacinth, hippos and crocodiles. Use hotel pools.
- Western Kenya is a malaria area year round. Use nets or screened rooms and repellent from dusk, including at lakeside dinners.
- Avoid demonstrations in the CBD and at Kondele completely. On a protest day, reroute and stay in.
Kisumu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The famous Lwangni fish eateries by the port were demolished in 2019. Dunga is the fish shore now.
- Agree boat, fish and boda prices, duration and inclusions before anything starts.
- At the Impala Sanctuary go for the lakeside walk, and at the museum for the homestead, not for a safari or a national museum.
- Sightsee at 8am and 4pm and keep midday long and shaded. Kisumu heat is a schedule, not a detail.
Getting around Kisumu: public transport and more
- Use app taxis for the airport, evenings and Dunga trips, and keep a good driver number.
- Boda boda are cheap for short daylight hops. Carry small notes and avoid long lakeshore bodas after dark.
- Matatus serve Kakamega and Maseno cheaply. Ask your hotel which stage to board at.
- Kisumu airport is about 15 minutes from the centre, with Nairobi flights of under an hour.
