Things to do in Menorca
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Menorca
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall: warm, sea swimmable, places open but uncrowded, September best for swimmers.
Worst for a beach trip: cold, tramuntana winds, resorts shut and beach buses off.
Hottest, busiest and priciest month, worst for value and calm.
Walkers and culture season: wildflowers, Camí at its best, towns alive, resorts not serviced.

Where to stay in Menorca
Ciutadella
first trip, best overall base
Most beautiful town, best evening scene and closest town to the headline south west calas.
Mahón (Maó)
practical base, no car, off season
Capital, airport and bus hub, and the town that most fully stays alive November to April.
Cala Galdana
families and Camí walkers
Horseshoe bay with hotels behind the sand and Camí walking to Mitjana and Macarella.
Santo Tomàs and Son Bou
quiet beach base
Small calm Santo Tomàs and Menorca longest beach at Son Bou, good for a flop and walk week.
Fornells
low key and active base
Whitewashed village on a huge bay, for wind sports, diving, kayak tours and caldereta.
Es Mercadal, Ferreries and rural fincas
walkers, riders and value
The centre puts both coasts within about 20 minutes, with space, quiet and agroturismo value.
Think twice about
- Cala'n Bosch and Cala en Porter resort strips
Purpose built resorts with little Menorcan town life. Fine to visit, disappointing as a week long base.
- Resort towns in winter, including Son Bou, Punta Prima, Arenal d'en Castell, Cala'n Bosch and Santo Tomàs
They largely shut outside May to October, so a cheap winter rate can mean a ghost resort.
- Binibeca Vell itself
A small residential tourism village with few services and no evening scene, not a resort town.
- Listings marketed as Ciutadella or Mahón but 8 to 15 km outside town
Listings borrow the big names for distant locations. Verify the exact pin before booking.

Is Menorca safe?
- Menorca is exceptionally safe, with rare violent crime and walkable towns at night.
- The real risks are sun, dehydration, sea conditions and tramuntana gusts.
- Carry water everywhere, virgin calas and Talayotic sites have no shade or shops.
- Emergency awareness is normal big town awareness at dense fiesta crowds like Sant Joan.
Menorca travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- August itself: prices peak, calas fill by mid morning and the island calm is thinnest.
- Cala Turqueta by car at noon in August, and Binibeca Vell at midday.
- Caldereta sticker shock: confirm the price per person or per lobster weight before ordering.
- Do not anchor or stand on Posidonia seagrass meadows, they are protected.
Getting around Menorca: public transport and more
- Rent a car, it is the island one non negotiable for calas, fincas and Talayotic sites.
- Buses run about hourly on the Me-1 Mahón to Ciutadella spine, around 50 to 60 minutes.
- In season use the Lines 68 and 69 beach buses for Turqueta and Macarella and reserve seats.
- Mahón airport is 10 minutes from Mahón and about 50 minutes from Ciutadella.
