Things to do in Leuven
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Leuven
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall: long evenings, terraces open, students in town and festivals stacked, into early October.
Worst months: dark by 5pm and rain prone, redeemed only by the Christmas Market and candlelit beguinage.
Best weather with Rock Werchter and Hapje-Tapje, but students are away and some bars and restaurants close.
Underrated: Zythos beer season, blossom in the Kruidtuin and prices still low.

Is Leuven safe?
- Leuven is a genuinely safe city including at night, with no district to avoid on safety grounds.
- Use generic terrace pickpocket awareness in crowds on the Oude Markt.
- Watch for fast student bicycles, look both ways leaving any kerb and never walk in a cycle lane.
- Thursday is student night with rammed bars and scarce taxis, and stay alert at Bruxelles-Midi late at night if connecting there.
Leuven travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Drinking only Stella on the Oude Markt instead of Domus, De Coureur, Trappists or gueuze from the chalkboard.
- Paying sit down prices for food on Oude Markt terraces, the square is for drinks and Muntstraat, Vaartkom and De Werf are for eating.
- Taking the Stella tour as your only brewery experience without Domus or the Beer Adventure bike route.
- Day tripping Leuven in three hours from Brussels and missing the beguinage at dawn and the Oude Markt at night.
- Buying chocolate and waffles from international chains by the station instead of local chocolatiers nearby.
Getting around Leuven: public transport and more
- Walk the centre inside the ring, it is 20 minutes across.
- Trains run to Brussels in about 25 minutes and Brussels Airport direct in 15 to 18 minutes, and buy SNCB tickets in the app before boarding.
- Cycle like a local with Blue-bike at the station or Fietspunt for longer hires, and use De Lijn buses for Kessel-Lo and Heverlee.
- Driving in is the bad idea: the centre is largely car free and hotel parking runs up to 30 euros a day.
