Things to do in Bruges
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bruges
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, one of the two best times. Daffodils in the Beguinage, terraces reopening and canal boats back in full season.
Summer, warmest and longest days but peak crowds. August is busiest, so stay overnight and sightsee early and late.
Autumn, the other best time and the food season. Mussels return, crowds thin and hotel prices soften.
Winter. Winter Glow and the Christmas markets transform the centre, while January and February are the quietest, cheapest months.
Best months overall: April to May and September to early October.
What's on

Best things to do in Bruges
Belfort
Bruges landmark tower with 366 steps to the best panorama over red roofs, canals and church towers.
Bruges canal boat tour
Thirty minutes on the water that explains the city, passing low bridges, the Dijver and Groenerei.
Rozenhoedkaai
The most photographed spot in Bruges, where canals meet with the Belfry framed behind stepped gables.
Burg
The older, quieter square beside the Markt, holding the Town Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
Basilica of the Holy Blood
Small ornate chapel, free to enter, where a relic venerated as Christ's blood is kept.

Where to stay in Bruges
Historic Centre
first trip, all-round and romantic base
Belfry, Rozenhoedkaai and museums in minutes, with early mornings and late evenings to yourself.
Sint-Anna and Sint-Gillis
quiet, character and a second visit
Residential canals, the windmill walk and Café Vlissinghe in reach, 10 to 15 minutes from the Markt.
't Zand, Ezelstraat and West Bruges
practicality, food and value
More local restaurants and bars, slightly lower prices and easy arrival, still 10 minutes from the Markt.
Minnewater and the southern edge
green, calm and an easy station walk
Park side and swan side by the Lake of Love and Beguinage, with a 15 minute walk to the Markt.
Outside the walls
only with a car and a reason
Cheaper and larger with parking and gardens, but you give up stepping into the medieval city at dawn.
Think twice about
- Stationsplein forecourt
Transient strip of chain hotels facing the station square and main road, safe but the least Bruges feeling bed in the city for 2 or more nights.
- Markt and 't Zand square frontage
Cafe terraces, market set up, carriage and late night noise are the price of the view for light sleepers. One street back sleeps better.
- Far suburbs marketed as Bruges
Deep Sint-Michiels, Sint-Andries and Assebroek listings can mean a trip on buses. If the walk to the Markt is over 25 minutes, price it as a countryside stay.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead

- De Halve Maan: a few days ahead
- Royal Ostend Golf Club: a few days ahead
- Royal Zoute Golf Club: a few days ahead
- Bruges hot-air balloon ride: weeks ahead
- Zwin Natuur Park: a few days ahead
- Hotel Van Cleef: weeks ahead

- Belfry timed entry, take the first slot of the day.
- De Halve Maan tours, especially weekends and the XL tour, and canal boats in peak season using the first or last boat.
- De Jonkman, Sans Cravate and Zet'Joe need weeks, not days, for weekends. Rock-Fort and Zwart Huis need days.
- Musea Brugge museums close on Mondays, the single most common Bruges planning error.
- The Musea Brugge Card pays for itself at three sites, Groeninge plus Sint-Jans plus Church of Our Lady.
Is Bruges safe?
- Pickpockets in Markt crowds, at the station and around boat queues are the realistic risk.
- Look both ways for bicycles before stepping off a kerb, everywhere.
- Canals have low or no railings after dark and after beer, and cobbles are slippery when wet.
- Bruges is a low crime city. Normal city awareness is sufficient.
Bruges travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Markt front restaurants with touting staff and photo menus. Eat on Steenstraat, Simon Stevinplein or Langestraat instead.
- Souvenir chocolate chains around the Markt and Wollestraat, versus Dumon, The Chocolate Line and The Old Chocolate House.
- Historium, Choco-Story and the Frietmuseum as a paid bundle, and carriage rides at 60 euros plus.
- Belgian beer and chocolate souvenir shops near the station and Markt for take home buying.
- Bruges as a 4 hour midday coach stop. If that is all you have, do Belfry or Groeninge, one boat and Rozenhoedkaai.
Getting around Bruges: public transport and more
- Walk. The walled centre is about 2 km across and flat except for bridges.
- Hire bikes for Damme and the ramparts, lock properly, and ride gently in the narrow centre streets.
- De Lijn buses cover station to centre to suburbs and are contactless friendly.
- Trains are the superpower: Ghent 25 to 30 minutes, Ostend 15 to 20, Brussels about 1 hour, Antwerp about 85 minutes.
