Things to do in La Coruña
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit La Coruña
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring sweet spot: green headland, thin crowds and normal prices. May is arguably the best all-round month.
Summer beach and fiesta season: warmest and busiest, with San Juan in June and the Maria Pita festivals in August.
Autumn is locals' favourite: September keeps warmth with fewer crowds, October brings storms and superb shellfish.
Winter is mild but wet and windy: cheapest hotels, walk-in tables and storm watching, but little swimming or boat time.
Best months overall: May, June with San Juan booked deliberately, and September.
What's on

- Noite de San Xoán 23 June
The biggest night of the year: bonfires along Riazor and Orzan, grilled sardines, fireworks and a city that does not sleep.
- Feira Medieval July
A medieval fair in the Old Town.
- Festas de María Pita August
A month of concerts, fairs, the Habaneras festival and the Batalla Naval fireworks in Riazor bay.

Where to stay in La Coruña
Pescadería / Ensanche-Centro
first trip, all-round base
Between the marina galerias and Orzan beach, with the tapas streets and best hotel spread inside it.
Ciudad Vieja (Old Town)
atmosphere and quiet nights
Cobbled lanes and small plazas by Maria Pita, quieter at night, with some uphill lanes and limited parking.
Riazor / Orzán beachfront
beach-led or summer trip
Sea view rooms and surf at the door, 15 minutes along the promenade to Maria Pita, but loud late in peak season.
Monte Alto
local life and value, longer stays
Residential headland by the Tower and aquarium, with local bars, sea on three sides and good apartments.
Oleiros / Santa Cruz
resort-style add-on with a car
Green suburbs across the ria with calm beaches and the Santa Cruz castle, but a drive for every dinner in the city.
Think twice about
- Elviña / San Cristóbal station area, Los Mallos and Matogrande
Not dangerous, but charmless, car centric and short on evening life, so a leisure visitor commutes in by bus for everything.
- Marineda City / Arteixo industrial-retail outskirts
A shopping and retail park base outside the walkable city that turns the trip into a drive and park exercise.
- Directly over the Orzán nightlife strip on a peak summer weekend
Streets behind Orzan beach concentrate late bars, so a room there on San Juan or in festival August is inside the party.
- Unvetted port or cruise-terminal-adjacent apartment listings
Listings can use a port or station address to imply a centre location. Check the actual street against Maria Pita before booking.

Is La Coruña safe?
- A safe city by Spanish standards, with only ordinary petty theft awareness in crowds and late night districts.
- The real risks are Atlantic currents and rogue swell: keep behind barriers at the Tower headland in storms.
- Take care in San Juan bonfire crowds and late night Orzan in peak summer. Emergency awareness and a phone copy of documents cover the realistic list.
La Coruña travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Seafood by weight ordered blind: ask the price per kilo and approximate weight before saying yes.
- Swimming at Orzan on a rough day: red flag means no swimming, and Matadero is a surf peak, not a paddling zone.
- Expecting Mediterranean weather: the Atlantic is cold even in August and a July day can be grey, so pack layers and a waterproof.
- Domus and the Aquarium lean family, so adults without children should do the Tower, markets, MEGA and Monte de San Pedro first.
- On cruise days the centre circuit fills at midday: do markets and Old Town early and return after about 4pm.
- Do not judge the city on paella: the canon is pulpo, shellfish, empanada, caldo and grilled fish.
- The tapas circuit lives from about 8:30pm, not 7pm, and lunch tapas run from about 1pm.
Getting around La Coruña: public transport and more
- Walk first: the centre is flat, the peninsula narrow and the promenade is the city's map.
- Urban buses cover Monte Alto, the station, MEGA and Monte de San Pedro. Taxis across the centre cost a few euros.
- BiciCoruna is the promenade bike-share. The airport is about 15 minutes by bus or taxi, and Santiago is 30 minutes by train.
- Do not keep a car in the city. Hire by the day for excursions instead.
