Things to do in Kunming
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kunming
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Blossom opening with cherry at Yuantong Shan and camellias at Jindian, gulls leaving through March.
Jacaranda season late April to mid May, the best overall window for a first trip.
Mushroom season and rains, lush hills and school holiday crowds in July and August.
Avoid 1 to 7 October for Golden Week, then dry clear weather and Dongchuan autumn colour.
Gulls return, Dongchuan red land and flooded Yuanyang terraces peak, best for photographers in December.
What's on

Think twice about
- Changshui Airport area
Isolated airport sprawl 25km out with nothing walkable and a long transfer every day.
- Chenggong District / Dounan as a base
Clean and modern but far from Cuihu, quiet at night and short on restaurants. Visit Dounan, do not sleep there.
- Immediate blocks south and west of Kunming Railway Station
Transient budget hotels, tour and tea touting and noisy early coach traffic. Same price buys a better street north.
- Shilin / Stone Forest town overnight
The park is a morning visit and staying out strands you 90 minutes from Kunming food and evening life.

- Carry your passport for museum, train and hotel checks. Emergency numbers are 110, 120 and 119.
Kunming travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Cheap Stone Forest tours that stop at jade, tea, silver and herbal medicine halls.
- Tea and jade pressure sales near scenic exits. Compare in city tea markets before buying.
- Do not swim in Dianchi or pay for lake cruise upsells. Save boat money for Fuxian.
- Never forage mushrooms or rush the hotpot timer. Eat wild mushrooms only at established specialists.
- Fresh Dounan flowers cannot be flown home internationally. Buy dried or pressed products instead.
Getting around Kunming: public transport and more
- Metro Line 6 runs from Changshui Airport to the city in about 40 minutes.
- Do not confuse Kunming Station in the centre with Kunming South Station in Chenggong for high speed trains.
- Use DiDi for taxis and the metro at peak hours around Nanping and Beijing Road.
- Shared bikes and e-bikes suit Cuihu and the Dianchi greenway. Watch for silent e-bikes elsewhere.
