Things to do in Jiuzhaigou
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Jiuzhaigou
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Late winter: cold, quiet and cheapest, with ice on the falls and thinner, duller water in some ponds.
Spring green-up from April peak pricing: fresh forest, strengthening waterfalls and far fewer people than autumn.
Wet season: fullest waterfalls and deep green forest, with the year's highest landslide and mudslide risk and school holiday crowds.
Peak autumn colour, best mid to late October after Golden Week. Highest prices and crowds of the year in this window.
Colour fades early in the month, peak pricing ends 15 November, then off-season prices and the first snow.
Winter off season: frozen falls, snow on upper valleys, icy boardwalks, and Huanglong usually closed or very limited.
What's on
- National Day Golden Week 1 to 7 October
China's biggest domestic travel week: the park cap is reached, prices peak and tickets sell out. Time against it, not for it.
- Tibetan New Year (Losar) varies, February or March
Marked in Zhangzha and the county's Tibetan communities with a quieter local character than the Han Chinese New Year peak.
Best things to do in Jiuzhaigou
Five Flower Lake
Layered blue and green travertine water with sunken trunks visible on the bed, best early before the tour groups arrive.
Long Lake
The park's largest and highest lake at about 3060 metres, a long blue finger in a cold, quiet alpine amphitheatre.
Five-Color Pond
A small travertine pond below Long Lake with some of the most intense turquoise and blue colour in the park.
Nuorilang Waterfall
A broad 270 metre wide fall at the valley junction, partly collapsed in the 2017 quake and restored for the full reopening.
Pearl Shoal Waterfall
Water sheets sparkling over a wide travertine shoal then drops as a fan waterfall, on the classic Rize downhill walk.
Mirror Lake
The reflection lake, holding cliffs and forest perfectly on a windless morning before about 9am and merely pretty after.
Panda Lake
A deep blue green upper Rize lake with its own waterfall, usually a notch calmer than Five Flower Lake below it.
Arrow Bamboo Lake
A calm reedy lake ringed by panda bamboo, and the right starting point for the downhill Rize lake sequence.

- Listings that say Jiuzhaigou but are in the county town 40 km away or at Chuanzhusi by the airport. Check the map, not the title.

- Flying into the 3448 metre airport and going straight to Huanglong. Sleep low in Zhangzha first.
