Things to do in Jiujiang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Jiujiang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best spring window: Huajing blossoms, full waterfalls, fresh Yunwu tea picking and good walking temperatures.
Plum rain month and the worst first trip timing: washed out views and the slickest steps of the year.
City heat is brutal but Guling is a cool escape; waterfalls run full and domestic crowds peak in August.
Best autumn window with the clearest Hanpokou mornings, but early October Golden Week is the most crowded week of the year.
Poyang winter birding season, peaking mid December to early January with Siberian cranes at Wucheng.
Lushan snow and rime season turns Guling's villas into a winter scene, with icy paths and fogged views as the trade off.
What's on
- Poyang Lake Winter Birding Season November to March, peak mid December to early January
Siberian cranes and mass wintering birds at Wucheng; book guides and beds ahead.
- Lushan Yunwu Tea Season around Qingming, early April
Fresh Cloud Mist tea picking and tea market activity; dates follow the harvest.
- Dragon Boat Festival usually June, fifth lunar month
Dragon boat activity on regional waters including the Xihai area; a lively add on, not a trip pick.
- Mid-Autumn Festival usually September
Moon viewing over Guling's lakes at the start of the best autumn window.
- Spring Festival January or February, varies by lunar calendar
Lantern lit family season with the nationwide travel rush and some closures.
Best things to do in Jiujiang
Lushan National Park

Kuling Street
The main street of a summit town founded as a summer retreat, lined with stone villas and best walked at dusk in the mist.
Hanpokou
A pass on the eastern rim for sunrise over sea of clouds and Poyang Lake, best on a clear morning after checking the weather.
Wulao Peak
Five linked peaks climbed in sequence, with peak four widely judged the best viewpoint over the ridge and Poyang Lake.
Three Cascades Waterfall
Lushan's signature waterfall, a three tier drop of about 155 metres earned by a long staircase of roughly 2600 steps.
Meilu Villa
The preserved summer villa of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling, later also used by Mao Zedong in 1959.
Former Site of the Lushan Conference
The auditorium where the 1959 Lushan Conference purged Peng Dehuai, a quiet and powerful stop for modern China history.
Xunyang Tower

Where to stay in Jiujiang
Guling Town, Lushan summit
Lushan itself, couples, summer heat escape
Walkable to sights and sightseeing buses, with dawn access to Hanpokou and misty evenings in town.
Xunyang riverfront, Jiujiang city
riverfront evenings, Donglin Temple, first or last night
Flat and food rich, with Xunyang Tower, Gantang Lake and Yanshui Pavilion walkable and the station a short ride away.
Lianxi and Bali Lake, Jiujiang
drivers, Poyang side day trips, modern comfort
Newer districts with wider roads and newer hotels, practical for self driving toward Hukou and Pengze.
Think twice about
- Jiujiang Railway Station perimeter as a sightseeing base
Transit oriented and noisy, a ride away from every sight. Fine for an overnight, wrong for a three night stay.
- Wenquan Town and the mountain foot as an only Lushan base
You pay the ascent, queues and weather risk every day and get none of Guling's evenings or dawns.
- Outlying Guling villa lanes far from sightseeing bus stops in winter
Beautiful but dark and quiet to a fault off season, with scarce taxis and long wet walks to dinner.
- Hukou, Pengze and Wucheng as general bases
Thin evening food and lodging and an hour plus from everything else. Use them for day trips or birding only.

- Reserve Guling villa and hotel restaurants on weekends and holidays.
Is Jiujiang safe?
- Stone steps on Wulao Peak and at Sandiequan are slick when wet; wear grippy shoes and respect safety closures after heavy rain.
- The summit is 6 to 10 degrees cooler than the city and mist can cut visibility to metres; carry a layer year round.
- Keep distance from Poyang's protected cranes and wear life jackets on lake and reservoir boats.
- Carry your passport for real name ticket and hotel checks and set up mobile payment before arriving.
Jiujiang travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day Lushan blitz tours sold at stations make their money in shops; buy the 7 day ticket and go at your own pace.
- Confirm fish and mountain special prices, by weight where relevant, before they are cooked in Guling.
- Take Route A at Lushan Xihai and skip the fishing village Route B with its extra charges and waits.
- Do not let an itinerary swap Donglin Temple for the separate modern Donglin Big Buddha site.
Getting around Jiujiang: public transport and more
- Private cars generally cannot ascend Lushan; park at the foot and use the cableway round trip about 120 yuan or the scenic bus up the 400 bend road.
- Buy the sightseeing bus pass on arrival, about 70 to 90 yuan and valid 7 days, and keep it with the 160 yuan park ticket.
- Jiujiang Station suits the city and north side; Lushan Station is a different station closer to the cableway side.
- County day trips to Hukou, Pengze, Wucheng and Xihai are car days in practice; hire a car with driver through your hotel.
