Things to do in Huangshan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Huangshan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the all round best season, with rapeseed around the villages and the highest sea of clouds rates after rain.
Summer brings plum rain in June and July, full waterfalls, deep green peaks and school holiday crowds.
Autumn has the clearest skies and best colour. October outside Golden Week is the most recommended month.
Winter brings rime ice, frequent cloud seas, a CNY 150 ticket and discounts, plus icy stairs and seasonal peak and canyon closures.
What's on
- National Day Golden Week 1 to 7 October
Avoid the mountain entirely. The daily entry cap is reached and cableway queues run to multiple hours.
- Labour Day Golden Week 1 to 5 May
Avoid the mountain. The villages are busy but manageable early in the day.
- Spring Festival late January to mid February, varies by year
Village atmosphere and Tunxi lanterns, with national transport strain and many small restaurants closed at first.

Is Huangshan safe?
- Local laws are enforced strictly in mainland China and exit bans are possible. Carry your passport.
- Summit weather is about 10 degrees colder than the base, with wet and icy stairs. Wear grippy shoes and carry crampons in winter.
- Follow one way routings on busy paths and never climb rails for photos at Bright Summit, the Welcoming Pine or in the canyon.
Huangshan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- National Day and Labour Day Golden Weeks fill the mountain to its cap, with cableway queues of multiple hours. Move any dates that touch them.
- Buy poles, ponchos, gloves and snacks in Tangkou. Summit prices for basics are multiples of foot prices.
- Hongcun at midday in a tour crowd is the weakest version of the village. Overnight or enter after 16:00.
Getting around Huangshan: public transport and more
- Arrive at Huangshan North station or Tunxi Airport, then use tourist buses or hotel transfers to Tangkou, Hongcun and Tunxi.
- Private cars stop at the transfer centres. Scenic buses at CNY 19 each way run from Tangkou to the Yungu and Yuping cableway stations.
- Ride Yungu up for the gentler start, cross the summit, and descend by Yuping past the Welcoming Pine, or the reverse.
- Google Maps is unreliable in mainland China. Carry sight and hotel names in Chinese characters and set up phone payment before arrival.
