Things to do in Granada
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Granada
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: long light, Día de la Cruz, Corpus and the music festival, before peak heat.
Mid-September to late October is the other sweet spot, warm and energetic with harvest light.
35 to 40C heat, emptier city and night Alhambra visits. Workable only on an early and late rhythm.
Autumn tapeo season at full energy, with the international jazz festival as the headline event.
Cold, clear winter city with Sierra Nevada ski season an hour away and thin Alhambra crowds.
What's on
- Semana Santa March / April
Processions through the Albaicín and Realejo, with fires in Sacromonte on Holy Wednesday.
- Día de la Cruz 3 May
Squares and patios fill with flower-decked crosses, street bars and traditional dress and dance.
- Corpus Christi and the Feria late May / June, week of Corpus
Granada's biggest week: fairground casetas, horses, flamenco dresses and the Corpus procession.
- Festival Internacional de Música y Danza mid-June to early July
Classical music and dance with signature concerts in the Palacio de Carlos V and Generalife theatre.
- Festival Internacional de Jazz November
The headline autumn event in our by-season section.

Best things to do in Granada
Alhambra

Albaicín

Zambra María la Canastera
Small family cave zambra with singers, guitarist and dancers inches from a ring of seats.
Jardines de Zoraya

Where to stay in Granada
Centro
first trip, all-round base
Flat and central, with the Cathedral, Darro walk and tapas bars close and minibuses to the sights.
Realejo
local, food-first, repeat trip
Old Jewish quarter below the Alhambra hill with serious tapas bars and an easier flat walk home.
Lower Albaicín / Carrera del Darro
romantic stays
Waking opposite the Alhambra with lanes and miradores from the door, if you choose the lower streets.
Alhambra hill
one-night splurge
Sleeping beside the monument in gardens and silence, but every dinner means a descent and return.
Sacromonte
one-night novelty
A memorable night in a cave, but steep unlit lanes and little food make it a poor multi-night base.
Think twice about
- High Sacromonte and uppermost Albaicín lanes
Unlit cobbled lanes, no vehicle access and a steep walk with no late food nearby make a poor base.
- Almanjayar, Polígono de Cartuja, La Chana and far Zaidín
Ordinary residential districts with no sights or tapas scene in walking distance and a bus ride to everything.
- Calle Elvira, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón and Plaza de la Universidad bar streets
Student nightlife territory and the wrong place for a light sleeper without an interior courtyard room.
- Unlicensed Albaicín apartments with no address precision
Apartments can be hundreds of steps from the nearest taxi point, a recurring problem with heavy luggage.

Is Granada safe?
- Pickpockets in Alhambra queues, at San Nicolás at sunset, on crowded minibuses and around the Cathedral. Emergency and care with wet Albaicín cobbles.
- Summer heat reaches 35 to 40C. Do the Alhambra early, rest at midday and tapear after 8.30pm.
Granada travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Alhambra ticket resellers charging 60 to 80 euros for tickets that cannot legally be transferred to your name.
- The rosemary approach near the Cathedral and Plaza Nueva, view-terrace restaurants, and touted dinner-show flamenco on Plaza Nueva.

- Walk the centre, Realejo and lower Albaicín. Minibuses C30, C31, C32 and C34 cover the Alhambra, Albaicín and Sacromonte.
