- Swim only at the sheltered harbour beach. The rocky Atlantic side has currents and no lifeguards.
- Do not count on an ATM or card payment on the island. Bring small XOF notes and coins from Dakar.
- Emergency numbers in Senegal are police 17, ambulance 15 and fire 18.
Gorée Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Agree any guide's total price and duration at the pier before setting off, or decline with a polite firm non merci.
- Do not accept an item pressed into your hand unless you intend to buy it.
- Do not repeat any single slave trade number for Goree as settled fact; the building's scale is honestly disputed.
Getting around Gorée Island: public transport and more
- Ferries leave Dakar's Gare Maritime in the Plateau roughly every one to two hours, taking about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Bring your passport or ID, which may be checked at the Dakar port, and take an early boat on dry season weekends.
- There are no cars on Goree. Everything is a walk of at most about 20 minutes end to end.
