Things to do in Gaziantep
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Gaziantep
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, warm but manageable days and cool evenings, with the pistachio harvest and GastroAntep in September.
Good shoulder months, cooler and quieter and cheaper, with shorter days and occasional November air quality dips.
Worst months, inland summer heat routinely around and above 40C makes sightseeing a dawn and dusk sport.
Cold continental winter with near freezing nights, the richest food calendar, the cheapest hotels and Liberation Day on 25 December.
Hot and building toward peak summer, manageable only with early starts and long midday breaks indoors.

Think twice about

- Karkamis and the Syrian border zone
A military sensitive border area, not a visitor destination. Keep day trips well clear of it.
- Castle hill back lanes after dark
Unlit old city alleys are deserted late at night rather than dangerous. Enjoy them by day and take main streets home.

Is Gaziantep safe?
- Prefer low rise historic stone hotels or modern inspected builds, and know your room exit route.
- The realistic risks are traffic, summer heat above 40C, and beyran chilli, not street crime.
- Dress modestly for mosque visits and ask before photographing people in the bazaars.
- Carry cash in small notes, some beloved lokantas are reported cash only and small shops prefer it.
Gaziantep travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Buy baklava from the named houses, taste before a kilo, and buy takeaway boxes on your last day, not your first.
- Do not assume the old Archaeology Museum or the castle interior is open; check the official museum site first.
- Compare two or three pistachio stalls in Elmaci Pazari and be suspicious of prices far below the row.
- Graze in small meals through the day instead of one giant lunch that writes off the evening.
Getting around Gaziantep: public transport and more
- Walk the old city circle of castle, Bey Quarter, bazaars and famous kitchens, in comfortable shoes.
- Use the tram and plentiful taxis for Zeugma Museum, the Culinary Arts Centre and the modern north.
- Halfeti, Yesemek and Gobeklitepe need a rental car, a tour or a private driver guide, at 1.5 to 2 plus hours each way.
- Gaziantep Airport is about 20 km south with frequent domestic flights via Istanbul and Ankara.
