Things to do in Fuzhou
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Fuzhou
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, late October and November, when heat, humidity and typhoon risk fall away.
April is the spring pick, with blue tears season opening on Pingtan but more rain.
March, December and February are cool to mild and good for walking, and winter is prime hot spring season.
June to September brings plum rain, then heat, humidity and typhoon risk, so sightsee early and keep plans flexible.
Early May brings the Labour Day holiday crowds, as early October brings National Day Golden Week.
What's on

Best things to do in Fuzhou
Three Lanes and Seven Alleys

Lin Zexu Memorial Hall
A courtyard memorial to the anti opium hero that gives the clearest context for treaty port Fuzhou in about an hour.
Yantai Mountain Historical Area
A banyan covered hill of consulate era villas now holding cafes and bookshops, best in late afternoon above the river.
Shangxiahang Historical and Cultural Block
The old merchant waterfront of guild halls and stone lanes, rougher and more everyday than Sanfang Qixiang.

An hour on the Min River past the lit Liberation Bridge and both banks, the best first night activity in Fuzhou.
Where to stay in Fuzhou
Gulou old centre
first trip, walking base
Sanfang Qixiang, Dongjiekou metro and most restaurants are on foot, under the banyans of the old city.
West Lake, west Gulou
quiet, local, food focused stays
The lake park and Fujian Museum are at the door and the old centre is a short walk or ride east.
Taijiang, Min River north bank
river views and the night cruise
Shangxiahang, the cruise wharf and the modern riverfront are here, with metro links back to Gulou.
Cangshan, south bank
Yantaishan evenings
The consulate hill cafes and Liberation Bridge are close, at the cost of rides to the old city sights.
Think twice about
- Fuzhou South Station and far Cangshan new development
Tower blocks and long empty rides to every sight. Fine for a dawn train, dead as a base.
- Changle, near the airport
About 45 to 60 minutes from the old city. A logistics stop for early flights only.
- Sanjiangkou and outer Mawei
Worth an evening for the arts centre, but too far east to sleep for a Fuzhou trip.

- Watch for typhoon disruption from July to September, which can close island, mountain and rail links at short notice.
- Use normal big city care in crowded snack queues and around stations, where pickpocketing is the textbook risk.

- Sit down tourist restaurants on Nanhou Street charging banquet prices for snack dishes.
- The Gushan cable car as a plan, since it is small, old and can close without notice.
- Any operator guaranteeing blue tears on Pingtan, which no one can guarantee.
- Same day tulou tours from Fuzhou that hide more than nine hours of travel, and very cheap Buddha Jumps Over the Wall.
Getting around Fuzhou: public transport and more
- Base in Gulou and walk the old core, using Dongjiekou and Nanmendou as the metro hubs.
- Line 4 serves the Xichan Temple area and Line 5 serves the Gushan side, while Pingtan trains run from Fuzhou South.
- Set up Alipay with a foreign card before arrival, as small shops and ticket gates assume phone payment.
