Things to do in Flores
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Flores
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best: dry season, dry trails, reliable lake days, peak prices and crowds.
Shoulder sweet spots: November green and quieter, April hot but glorious.
Hot then wet: dawn starts, afternoon storms, emptier ruins.
Wettest and cheapest: muddy tracks, worst sunrise odds, no El Mirador trek.
What's on
- Semana Santa Holy Week, dates vary March or April
Processions in Flores and Santa Elena; hotels and flights fill.
- Fiesta de la Virgen de la Asuncion Mid-August
Island fiesta with parades, dances and religious ceremonies; confirm programme locally.
- Cristo Negro celebrations Around 15 January
Black Christ devotion marked locally across Peten; busier festive island.
- Dia de los Muertos 1-2 November
All Saints and All Souls in cemeteries and churches as dry season begins.
- Uaxactun equinox morning Around 20 March and 22 September
Group E solar alignments; community tours run, September may cloud out.
Best things to do in Flores
Parque Central de Flores

Zoologico Petencito
Small native animal zoo reached by lancha, strongest for children and the spider monkey encounter.
ARCAS Wildlife Rescue Center

Where to stay in Flores
Isla de Flores
first trip, all-round base
Every restaurant, tour desk and sunset within a ten minute walk on busy lit streets.
San Miguel and Tayazal peninsula
couples and splurge stays
Quiet lakeside hotels with private docks facing the island, reached by hotel boat.
Santa Elena shore
budget and logistics
Cheaper rooms near terminal and airport, with the island view from across the water.
El Remate and north-east lakeshore
quiet stays and shorter Tikal drives
Village lakeside hotels with docks, swimming and Cerro Cahui on the doorstep.
Inside Tikal National Park
serious Tikal visitors
Dawn and dusk inside the park without the 3 a.m. bus, at the cost of town life.
Think twice about
- Causeway and Santa Elena streets late at night
Unlit stretches and fast traffic with no evening footfall. Tuk-tuk or taxi back after dark instead of walking.
- San Benito back streets at night
Local residential area with no visitor infrastructure. Visit ARCAS as an organised daytime trip.
- Isolated lakeshore listings far from Flores or El Remate
No hotel boat, staff or dinner options and long dark roads. Isolation here is a compromise, not a bargain.
- Island bar strip rooms before a sunrise tour
Weekend bar noise is the common island sleep complaint. Book quieter north or east lanes that night.
