Things to do in Antigua Guatemala, planned over three days
Best time to visit Antigua Guatemala
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, best overall: clear volcano views, dry cobblestones and Acatenango at its most reliable, with peak crowds Dec to Feb.
Early rainy season shoulder: brief afternoon showers, lush hills, fewer crowds and hotel deals, mornings usually clear.
Canicula mini dry spell in late July and August often gives a good 2 to 3 week window, warm and greener with fewer crowds.
Wettest months and worst for volcano hiking, with clouded views and muddy trails, but lowest prices and emptiest ruins.
What's on
- Festival de Barriletes Gigantes (Giant Kite Festival) 1 November
Enormous hand painted kites flown in cemeteries at Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepequez for All Saints and Day of the Dead.
- Festival de las Flores (Flower Festival) mid-November, dates vary
Antigua fills with floral art, parades and installations. Increasingly popular, book ahead.
- La Quema del Diablo (Burning of the Devil) 7 December
Bonfires across town to cleanse before Christmas and Immaculate Conception, lively and smoky.
- Semana Santa (Holy Week) 21 to 28 March 2027, Good Friday 26 March
Vast sawdust and flower alfombras, processions and hundreds of thousands of spectators. Book months ahead and rise at 4 to 5am on Good Friday.
- Independence Day 15 September
Parades and torch runs, lively and local, with road closures.
Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Antigua Guatemala
Arco de Santa Catalina
Butter-yellow arch framing Volcan de Agua, Antigua's postcard landmark and best first orientation point.
Convento de Santa Clara
Antigua's most atmospheric ruin, with an arched cloister, fountain and bougainvillea over a roofless nave.

Active pilgrimage church tied to Saint Hermano Pedro, giving the clearest sense of Antigua as a living religious town.

Where to stay in Antigua Guatemala
Historic Centre, within 6 blocks of Parque Central
first trip, all-round base
Everything is walkable, streets are lit and busy, and every price tier from hostels to convent hotels sits here.
La Merced / North Centre
couples and Semana Santa
Calmer residential colonial pocket around La Merced church, on the procession route, 5 to 10 minutes from the park.
South / Santo Domingo and San Francisco side
families wanting pools and gardens
A touch more spacious east and southeast centre with good larger hotels and easy walking still.
Outskirts with a View: El Hato, Cerro de San Cristobal, Santa Ines
retreat nights with transport
Hillside stays with volcano views and quiet, but you depend on shuttles or tuk-tuks for every dinner.
Think twice about
- Guatemala City as a base for Antigua
You lose Antigua's evenings and early mornings, add 1 to 2 hours of traffic each way, and base in a city with higher crime and far less walkability.
- Bus terminal and market fringe, western edge
Busy and fine by day but Antigua's roughest edge after dark, with pickpocketing and snatch reports in crowded market and bus zones. Tuk-tuk home after dark.
- Isolated streets beyond the centre grid, Cerro trail and unlit exits
Unlit roads leaving town and the Cerro de la Cruz trail after hours are where robbery reports historically cluster. Base inside the lit grid.

Is Antigua Guatemala safe?
- Antigua is Guatemala's safest major visitor town, but crowds at markets, processions and the bus terminal are pickpocket environments.
- Do not drink tap water. Hotels provide filtered or bottled water and ice in established centre restaurants is purified.
- Heed volcano alerts and your operator's call on Acatenango and Fuego, and take proper cold weather gear from November to February.
Antigua Guatemala travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Cheapest Acatenango street agencies are a false economy, with leaking tents and thin sleeping bags at below freezing camp.
- Jade and textile prices on 5a Avenida are the town's highest. Buy jade only from certified shops and bargain in markets.
- Day tripping Lake Atitlan in 6 hours satisfies almost no one. Overnight or save it.
Getting around Antigua Guatemala: public transport and more
- Walk the compact flat grid. Tuk-tuks cost Q10 to 20 per hop, agree the price before you ride.
- Pre-book a shuttle or private transfer from La Aurora airport, 45km and 1 to 2.5 hours depending on capital traffic.
- Uber works in Antigua for Cerro de la Cruz, Hobbitenango shuttles and village trips. You do not need a rental car.
