Things to do in Dunhuang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Dunhuang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Late April to May is prime, warm not hot with bookable Mogao. Avoid 1 to 5 May Labour Day crowds.
Peak summer and dawn and dusk only, with camp season, July apricots, starry sky concerts and the best Milky Way.
Cooling harvest month and the Silk Road International Cultural Expo. Book September earlier than any other month.
Avoid 1 to 7 October Golden Week. Mid to late October is superb, with golden poplars and thin crowds.
Shoulder secret, with off season pricing, halved tickets in some listings and vanishing crowds on cold bright days.
Winter is the art lover season, with 10 to 12 Mogao caves open, smaller groups and lower prices.
March to early April is the worst window, with sandstorm season, dust and possible site closures.
What's on
- Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo September
The city flagship cultural expo since 2016, with exhibitions and performances spilling into the market and dunes.
- Mingsha starry sky concerts mid-June to late October
Mass stargazing and starry sky concert evenings on the dunes, included with entry in peak season.
- Labour Day holiday 1-5 May
The first crowd detonation of the year. Mogao A tickets and hotels go first.
- National Day Golden Week 1-7 October
The second and sharper crowd detonation. Avoid unless you must.

Uneven camps and guesthouses, captive scenic area food prices and a paid ride to town every time.
- Unbranded desert camp listings booked on social media
No platform reviews and a documented pattern of manipulated expectations. Book camps only with verified reviews.
- Dunhuang Ancient City / far west developments
Basing next to a film set replica, far from the real caves town base and the food.

- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arriving. Foreign cards are limited outside big hotels and cash is backup.
Dunhuang travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Dunhuang Ancient City sold as history. It is a film set, fine for photos only.
- The 300 CNY west line car, which recovers the saving through shopping stops, rushed timing or renegotiation.
- Buying luminous cups and jade at the first market stall. Compare three stalls and haggle, or buy museum shop goods.
- Midday Mingsha in summer, with heat, glare and crowds. Use the ticket 3 day validity for sunset or sunrise.
Getting around Dunhuang: public transport and more
- Walk the small centre. Taxis are cheap and the default, about 15 CNY downtown to Mingsha and 30 CNY to Mogao.
- Flights serve Dunhuang Mogao Airport 13 km east. Check whether a train ticket uses Dunhuang station or Liuyuan station.
- No public transport serves Yumen or Yadan. Charter via your hotel at about 400 to 450 CNY per day or join a reputable tour.
