Best time to visit Douala
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, heart of the dry season, best roads, Ngondo in early December and peak fish season.
Shoulder season, hotter and more humid with rains building, and National Day on 20 May.
Worst months for most trips, heavy rains, flooding and deteriorating excursion roads.
Rains easing, roads recovering and Ngondo anticipation building through November.

Is Douala safe?
- The Southwest, Northwest and Far North regions are areas of active conflict and insecurity: do not travel there.
- Petty crime is common in Douala and violent crime rises at night, be in a known car after dark and go door to door.
- Use the hotel safe, theft from hotel rooms is reported, and choose hotels with guarded 24 hour access.
- Malaria is a year round risk, take prophylaxis, use repellent at dusk, and carry medical evacuation insurance.
Douala travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Never photograph the port, airports, bridges from restricted points or naval and military sites.
- The first price at Marché des Fleurs is an opening bid, bargain warmly but do not pay it.
- Central Douala is a river port, not a beach, and swimming in the Wouri is advised against everywhere.
- A cheap generic city tour stuck in traffic is Douala's standard bad product, pay for one good guide driver instead.
Getting around Douala: public transport and more
- Hire a hotel arranged car and driver by the day, it solves navigation, language, checkpoints and the journey home.
- Agree any taxi fare before the car moves, meters are not the system, and carry small notes.
- Do not use moto taxis as a visitor, the traffic and bag snatching risk is not worth the time saved.
- Walk only in Bonanjo in the morning, drive everything else, and allow 90 minutes for cross town trips.
