And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Buea and Mount Cameroon
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season heart and the climbing window, firmest trails and clearest summits, with the Race of Hope in February. No month makes Buea safe at present.
Dry season shoulders, workable with muddier trails and more summit cloud, so build in a spare weather day.
The long rains, August wettest, with slippery forest tracks, spate streams and the summit hidden for long stretches. No summit planning in these months.

Think twice about
- All of Buea and the Southwest Region, at present
An active armed conflict affects the whole region, with gunfire, lockdowns and kidnapping reported in and around Buea. There is no safe district to substitute today.
- Muyuka and Tiko
Both towns sit in Fako Division on roads affected by conflict and lockdowns.
- Buea on ghost town Mondays and during longer lockdowns
Separatist enforced lockdowns shut businesses, schools and transport, with punishment threatened for defying them. Markets, roads and sightseeing are closed or dangerous on those days.
- Mount Cameroon slopes without park permits and a licensed guide
The park requires fees and certified guides, the volcano is active, weather turns fast, and the present conflict makes any independent climb reckless.
