Things to do in Darvaza Gas Crater
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Darvaza Gas Crater
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is a best window: mild to warm days, cold camp nights, and brief desert flowering in April and early May.
Summer is best avoided: daytime heat regularly passes 40 C and approaches 50 C in the desert with no shade at the rim.
Autumn is the other best window: October is close to ideal, September still hot at midday, November cooling towards winter.
Winter is for the hardy: bright empty days but camp nights below freezing, sometimes to minus 15 C or lower, with yurt heating decisive.

Spring new year and the biggest public holiday in Turkmenistan; Ashgabat hotels and operators tighten around it.
- Turkmen Melon Day Second Sunday in August
National celebration of the melon harvest, a calendar curiosity rather than a reason to visit in peak desert heat.
- Independence Day 27 September
Official events in Ashgabat with tighter security around monuments on the guided city tour.
Best things to do in Darvaza Gas Crater
Darvaza Gas Crater
A collapsed gas crater still burning after dark in an empty desert, now with scattered flames rather than the old wall of fire.
Water Crater
A turquoise sinkhole bubbling with gas beside the highway, giving the fire crater its geological context on the drive north.
Mud Crater
A grey mud sinkhole blistering with escaping gas, the third crater on the standard Darvaza drive and the quietest of the three.
Erbent Village
A working desert village stop on the Ashgabat road that shows how permanent settlement survives in the central Karakum.
Ashgabat White Marble City Tour
The white marble capital toured with your guide on the non desert day, with monumental avenues, museums and Old Nisa nearby.
Where to stay in Darvaza Gas Crater
Darvaza crater camp area
the crater night itself
Yurt camp and operator tents about 500 metres from the rim, booked through your tour operator, with no other place to sleep nearby.

tour nights before and after the desert
Approved hotels in the monumental centre are part of your migration registration and put the guided city tour on your doorstep.
Think twice about
- Restricted border zones
Areas near the Afghanistan and Iran borders and other restricted zones need special State Migration Service permission and borders can close without notice.
- Ashgabat to Darvaza highway at night as a tour plan
The road is cracked and potholed and night driving outside cities is flagged as particularly dangerous; choose itineraries that sleep at the crater and return in daylight.

Karakum Desert Crossing
The 260 km desert crossing to the crater, half the experience and best done in daylight in a proper 4x4 with a tour driver.

Is Darvaza Gas Crater safe?
- Summer heat regularly reaches 45 C with no shade, water or facilities at the rim, winter camp nights fall well below freezing, and the nearest city medical care is about five hours away.
- There is no reliable phone signal at the crater, the state network offers no roaming for foreign SIMs, and first responders cannot reach remote desert areas: carry evacuation insurance.
- Carry your passport at all times, sleep only where you are registered, ask before photographing official buildings or markets, and do not drink alcohol in public spaces.
Darvaza Gas Crater travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Operator photographs showing a full wall of fire are historical: officials said in June 2025 the fire had fallen nearly threefold and visitors in August 2025 found only small pockets of flame.
- The unofficial currency rate is illegal to use: budget at the official 3.5 manat to the dollar and bring clean US dollar cash for the whole trip.
- Talk of a new e visa without an invitation letter is not officially confirmed: get your operator to confirm your visa route in writing.
Getting around Darvaza Gas Crater: public transport and more
- There is no independent travel on a tourist visa: a licensed operator, an approved itinerary and a guide are the transport system, by road in a car or 4x4.
- The crater run is about 260 to 276 km and four to five hours each way from Ashgabat, with the final stretch on desert tracks off the highway.
- Sleep at the crater and drive back in daylight rather than taking a same evening return on a cracked, unlit desert highway.
