Things to do in Ashgabat
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ashgabat
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best windows: April to early May and late September to October, with mild days, green foothills in spring and golden light in autumn.
Nowruz season: first warmth at 15 to 19 degrees, some rain in the wettest month and strong local festival texture.
Heat season: 35 to 38 degrees in the city and 40 to 45 in the Karakum; sightsee 6 to 10am and after 6pm.
Midwinter: cold, short, wind scoured days; the marble city is crisp and crowd free and hotels are easiest, but desert nights freeze.
What's on
- Nowruz 21-22 March
Persianate New Year: sprouted wheat semeni, family visiting and spring cleaning; book early as families travel.
- Turkmen Horse Day 27 April
Racing Horse Festival at the equestrian complex, the Akhal-Teke cult at full display; the best event timing in the calendar.
- Constitution and State Flag Day 18 May
State ceremony in the capital, alongside Magtymguly poetry days on 18-19 May.
- Carpet Day last Sunday in May
Carpet Museum centred celebrations with master weavers and exhibitions; pair with the bazaar.
- Galla Bayramy third Sunday in July
Wheat harvest holiday, mainly rural and state in character, with lesser visitor texture.
- Melon Day second Sunday in August
Festival of Turkmenistan's famous melons: tastings, competitions and bazaars at peak fruit season.
- Independence Day 27 September
Main state holiday: parade, concerts and fireworks, but hotels fill, prices spike and sights close for rehearsals.
- Day of Remembrance 6 October
Sombre commemoration at Halk Hakydasy for the 1948 earthquake; plan memorial visits respectfully, no festivities.
- Neutrality Day 12 December
State ceremony in the quiet winter season.
Best things to do in Ashgabat
State Museum of Turkmenistan
Do this first: its Margiana, Parthian and ethnography galleries make Nisa and Merv legible afterwards.
Turkmen Carpet Museum
The largest Turkmen carpet collection anywhere, including the record 301 square metre Golden Age carpet.
Old Nisa
UNESCO listed Parthian royal fortress whose eroded halls reward a guide and the museum visit first.
Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque
Vast marble mosque in Niyazov's home village, with Ruhnama quotes inscribed beside Quranic text.
Altyn Asyr Bazaar
The country's biggest working market at Sunday best: carpets, telpek hats, silk, fruit and livestock.
Monument of Neutrality
A 75 metre tripod arch topped by a gilded Niyazov statue, moved here in 2010 as a physical demotion.
Independence Monument
A 118 metre column ringed by gilded Turkmen heroes, in gardens that fill with local families at dusk.
Alem Cultural and Entertainment Centre
Home of the world's largest enclosed Ferris wheel, sealed inside a marble star: go for the absurdity.
Where to stay in Ashgabat
Central marble core: Magtymguly Avenue and Bitarap Türkmenistan Avenue
first trip, all-round base
Walkable by Ashgabat standards to the Russian Bazaar, Carpet Museum, parks, cafes and older lived-in streets.
Archabil and foothills luxury strip
views and resort calm
Cleaner air and postcard views toward the Kopet Dag, but car dependent for everything, 15 to 25 minutes from the centre.
Olympic Complex and Sport Hotel quarter
functional mid option
Wide, modern and easy for the airport road; fine if your operator places you here, with no independent draw.
Think twice about
- Choganly, the Altyn Asyr Bazaar outskirts and far northern suburbs
Isolated industrial market sprawl with nothing to walk to, punishing in heat, chosen by nobody on purpose.
- Near the airport
A highway void for a multi-day stay; flights land at 2 to 4am and you pay the distance into the centre twice daily.
- Unregistered private stays
Unregistered stays breach the registration rule and can void your visa position; base in a licensed hotel your operator knows.
- Monumental government quarter after dark
Empty, floodlit and patrolled; wandering alone photographing ministries invites a police conversation, not a mugging.

The expat reliable cafe restaurant in the centre: the default answer when dinner just needs to work.
Uzum Café
A calm French style cafe for salads, pastries and coffee when another grill platter would break you.

The steak institution: dry aged cuts and a vast meat platter, with English speaking service. No alcohol.
Chandybil Restaurant & Steakhouse
The foothills splurge grill: occasion dining on the Chandybil side. Choose one steak splurge per trip.
CZN Burak
Turkish celebrity chef spectacle dining in Arkach Mall; reserve and go off peak for the buzz.

Descend 267 steps to swim in a warm sulphurous underground lake held at 33 to 37 degrees.
Nokhur
Mountain village homestay with its own dialect, goat horn graves, silk weaving and a family plov dinner.
International Akhal-Teke Equestrian Complex
Meet the metallic gold Akhal-Teke horse at a stud farm or the hippodrome; race day in spring is the peak.
Saglyk Yoly
A 36 kilometre lit stair path across the foothills; spectacular but access is inconsistent, confirm first.
Ashgabat Golf Club
A Nicklaus designed 18 hole course in the foothills that almost nobody plays; arrange access in advance.
Geokdepe Fortress
Battlefield fortress and memorial mosque where 1881's storming became Turkmenistan's foundational trauma.
Yangykala Canyon
Banded pink, white and red cliffs over a former seabed; a two to three day western extension, not a day trip.
Best hotels in Ashgabat

The central luxury default: large rooms and a walkable park side location; request a renovated room.

Quiet foothills value luxury with spacious rooms and southern views to the Kopet Dag and Iran frontier.
Grand Turkmen Hotel
Location over polish: bang in the centre opposite the park, in a dated Soviet grand building.

Nusay Hotel
Small, central and park facing; useful when the big houses fill with delegations around state events.
Ak Altyn Hotel
The honest budget floor for a licensed hotel: clean, very Soviet rooms, a 30 to 40 minute walk to the centre.

- Yangykala Canyon: weeks ahead
- Ancient Merv: weeks ahead

- Confirm Darvaza camp, race day and horse items, the golf request and weekend reservations at CZN Burak and AlpEt a week ahead.
Is Ashgabat safe?
- Photography of airports, military, police, government buildings and border zones is prohibited; ask your guide, whose answer is law in practice.
- Public smoking is prohibited and fined, alcohol is restricted and many restaurants are dry; hotel bars are the controlled exception.
- Carry your passport and registration slip; hotels normally register stays over three working days with Migration, so verify yours did.
- Internet is heavily filtered and VPN use is illegal; download offline maps, books and music before arrival.
- Take evacuation grade insurance including medevac cover, and carry personal medication in quantity; the desert is far from help.
Ashgabat travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Old Darvaza photos: flows were cut in 2025 and the fire shrank roughly threefold, so expect embers and flames, not a lake of fire.
- Carpet buying without your guide risks a fake antique, no export certificate and confiscation at departure, in that order.
- Airport exchange and ATMs offer the worst rates or no function; arrive with crisp US dollars for the whole budget.
- Do not drink tap water, including in luxury hotels; bottled water is cheap and ubiquitous.
- Alem is a one hour curiosity in a circuit, not a half day, and a noon monument marathon in 40 degree heat is the classic bad day.
Getting around Ashgabat: public transport and more
- Your operator's car and driver is the system for airport pickup, city circuits and all excursions.
- Taxis are white, plentiful and cheap: confirm a manat fare per ride through your hotel or guide before riding.
- Walking is a dawn and evening pleasure in the centre and parks, not a method, given distances, heat and broken pavements.
- Driving yourself is not an option for tourists on standard visas.
