Is Bodø safe?
- Crime is very low. The main risks are wind, ice and darkness in winter.
- Pack windproof layers in every season, and use shoe spikes, a headtorch and reflectors in winter.
- Follow boat operator briefings exactly, and never swim in Saltstraumen.
- No drones near the airport or military areas. Bodø is an active military aviation town and rules are enforced.
Bodø travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Bodø as a Lofoten waiting room, or using it as a Lofoten day trip base. Give each its own nights.
- Visiting Saltstraumen at slack water, when the strongest current looks like an ordinary river.
- Expecting an old town. The centre was destroyed in 1940 and rebuilt, so judge it on light, water and food.
- Chasing aurora on one winter transit night, or in midsummer when there is no darkness.
- Paying for a low harbour sea view in winter, when a storm means rain on glass. High floors are the view product.
Getting around Bodø: public transport and more
- Walk first: centre, harbour, station and most restaurants are 5 to 20 minutes on foot.
- The airport is about a 20 minute flat walk in good weather; buses and taxis cover bad weather.
- City buses serve Rønvik, the museum area and Saltstraumen. Buy in the Reis Nordland app, card is the norm.
