Cheap things to do in Geneva
Old town walks, lake views and great-value dinners without breaking the bank.
Geneva has a reputation for emptying wallets, but if you know where to eat and what to skip, it gives a lot for free: a stunning old town, a world-famous lake, proper parks and two of the best-value acclaimed restaurants in Switzerland. These three days are for the traveller who wants to feel the city properly, not just photograph it from an expensive terrace.
Day 1: Old Town and the Reformation
A morning climbing cathedral towers and reading city history off stone walls gives way to an afternoon of oversized chess in the park and a great-value dinner that proves Geneva's best meals don't have to cost a fortune.
- 9:30 AM
Manor department store food hall
Locals' favourite budget spot in the centre, grab a cheap coffee and pastry from the food hall to kick off the day.

The cathedral is free; the tower climb costs a few francs and pays you back with the lake and Mont Blanc.

Day 2: Lakefront from Pâquis to Eaux-Vives
Coffee on a jetty, the Jet d'Eau up close, a plate of perch on the beach terrace and a proper French bistro in the evening: this is the Geneva locals actually use.

Bains des Pâquis
Start the morning at this beloved public lakeside bathhouse, grab a cheap coffee on the jetty and soak up the lake views before the crowds arrive.

Jet d'Eau + lakefront walk + CGN boat ride
Stroll the jetty under the iconic 140-metre fountain, walk past the Flower Clock and through Jardin Anglais, all free and totally classic Geneva.
Map - 1:15 PM
Restaurant de la Plage des Eaux-Vives
Filets de perche on the long beach terrace with the Jet d'Eau in view; it's the day's one treat, so share fries.

Skip these
- Jet d'Eau and Flower Clock as standalone attractions: minutes, not hours.
- Lakefront and Rue du Rhône tourist menus at splurge prices for ordinary food. Walk inland, or to Pâquis or Carouge, and eat better for less.
- Geneva as a day trip base for Zermatt or Interlaken: 3.5 to 4 hours each way eats the day in transit.
- Expecting a full week of city sights: 1 to 2 days for Geneva itself, then day trips.
