Things to do in Charlotte, splurging
Big dinners, design detours and Charlotte's best cocktail bars.
This is Charlotte for people who want to eat well every single night and spend the hours in between in interesting rooms, whether that's a Mario Botta art museum or a 76-acre former Ford plant. The city's best food is genuinely good by any national standard, the cocktail bars are serious, and the neighbourhood-hopping keeps things from feeling like a resort loop. Come with a flexible dinner budget and comfortable shoes.

Skip these
- Rock-bottom motel rates on Sugar Creek, Nations Ford and Independence are a genuine safety and quality mistake.
- Museum of Illusions is fun and franchised but priced like a headline attraction. The Mint, Bechtler and Gantt are free on Wednesday evenings.
- Do not build a night around Queen City Quarter, the old Epicentre. It is mostly chain bars; South End, NoDa and Plaza Midwood are where locals go out.
- Do not expect a historic old town or waste a splurge on a chain steakhouse while Counter- and Rada exist.
