Things to do in Victoria
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Victoria
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Calm transition windows between the trade winds, with the best diving and snorkelling visibility and the best all-round weather.
South-east trades: cooler, drier and breezier, peak crowds in July and August, rougher south-east coasts and a choppier Praslin ferry.
North-west monsoon: hot, humid and wet, with December and January the wettest months and west coast swimming often unsafe.
What's on
- Beau Vallon Regatta Usually early October

- Festival Kreol late October, Tonbola finale 29 to 31 October in 2026

Where to stay in Victoria
Beau Vallon
all-round base, beach, eating out and value
Mahe's social beach with every tier of stay within walking distance, plus dive shops, the bus to Victoria and Bazar Labrin.
Eden Island and Victoria
stopovers, ferry and boat days, business
Marina convenience by the jetty and the airport road, with Victoria's market and sights at hand and no real beach.
Port Launay and the west coast
resort splurge and quiet
Big resort bays and the marine park at the door, with everything else a drive away, so a hire car is part of the deal.
Think twice about
- Back streets of Victoria at night
Quiet and poorly lit once the centre empties, with a risk of opportunistic crime. Walk lit main streets or take a taxi.
- Isolated beaches and unlit trails after dark
Be particularly alert in isolated areas, especially at night; theft targets beaches and trails.

Is Victoria safe?
- Smaller islands off Mahe have limited medical care for serious illness or injury; patients must reach Mahe.
- Be particularly alert at Beau Vallon, in Victoria back streets and in isolated areas, especially at night.
- Most beaches have no lifeguards and Beau Vallon can have rip currents when the sea is rough; ask locally before swimming.
- Drug penalties are severe, including for possession and airport transit. Emergency number 999.
Victoria travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Downtown Victoria sold as a beach base; it has no real beach and quiet nights, so most visitors sleep at Beau Vallon.
- Lookalike Travel Authorisation sites that overcharge for the official permit.
- Leaving valuables in parked cars or on the sand, the commonest local theft pattern.
- Assuming every coast swims year round; the safe coast flips with the trade winds.
Getting around Victoria: public transport and more
- Hire a car for part of the stay to reach the west coast, trailheads and Del Place; driving is on the left on narrow, steep roads.
- SPTC buses circle Mahe from Victoria for a flat fare of a few rupees, but run slow and stop early in the evening.
- Taxis are expensive; agree the fare before you ride.
- Cat Cocos runs Mahe to Praslin in about 1 hour, and Cat Rose hops Praslin to La Digue in about 15 to 20 minutes.
