Things to do in Trapani
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Trapani
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Arguably the best all round month: Zingaro without heat risk, clear Erice views and prices before the summer step up.
The sweet spot: warm sea, all island infrastructure open, long evenings and manageable weekday crowds.
Warmest swimming, crowds gone in the first week, plus Cous Cous Fest in San Vito and the grape harvest.
Spring walking and food season, with Holy Week and the Misteri procession at Easter as the defining event.
Maximum sea and friction: hottest, busiest and priciest, with Ferragosto crowds and heat management needed on walks.
Superb for hiking, Segesta and Erice, still swimmable early on, with ferry timetables thinning late in the month.
The local city, cheap and quiet: trattorie and museums are yours, but islands, lidos and the cable car are limited.
What's on
- I Misteri di Trapani Easter week, Good Friday procession
The city's defining event: the Misteri statues are carried through Trapani for about 24 hours from Good Friday afternoon.
- Cous Cous Fest Second half of September, about 10 days
International couscous championship in San Vito Lo Capo with tastings, concerts and cooking shows.
- Luglio Musicale Trapanese July
Trapani's summer open air music festival and the heart of its summer evening programme.
- Vendemmia in Marsala and Trapani wine country September harvest season
Grape harvest season when cellar visits gain a working winery dimension. Check Florio and Pellegrino calendars.
- Presepe Vivente di Custonaci Christmas period
Noted living nativity staged in the Grotta Mangiapane cave village near Custonaci.
Best things to do in Trapani
Riserva Naturale Orientata Saline di Trapani e Paceco
Salt pans, windmills and flamingos south of the city, best walked in the hour before sunset as the water turns pink and gold.
Museo del Sale
Small museum in an old salt mill at Nubia explaining the hard traditional labour behind Trapani salt harvesting.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele
The baroque main street of the old town peninsula, best walked slowly in morning light and again for the evening passeggiata.
Chiesa del Purgatorio
Church housing the Misteri, twenty life-size Passion statue groups carried through Trapani for 24 hours from Good Friday.
Piazza Mercato del Pesce
The old fish market piazza by the port, worth an early visit to watch the night catch come in and be sold.
Torre di Ligny
Spanish era watchtower at the tip of the peninsula with a small museum and the best rooftop panorama in the old town.
Spiaggia delle Mura di Tramontana
City beach directly below the old town walls, ideal for an early swim or a sunset dip without getting in a car.
Museo Regionale Agostino Pepoli
Western Sicily's main decorative arts museum, strong on Trapanese coral work, goldsmithing and local devotion.
Where to stay in Trapani
Centro Storico
first trip, all-round base
Walk to restaurants, the port, the fish market, the city beach walls and the evening passeggiata, with no car needed on town days.
New Town / Via Fardella-Villa Margherita
drivers and work or kite trips
More spacious hotels and easier parking east of the old town, trading atmosphere for logistics.
San Giuliano
beach and pool trips with children
Beachfront resort properties east of the centre, chosen only if the trip is primarily beach and pool.
Erice
split stay, one or two romantic nights
Romantic and cooler after day trippers leave, but 750 metres up from every ferry, beach and salt pan, so wrong as a main base.
Favignana and the Egadi Islands
slow island slice of two or more nights
Wonderful for cycling and swimming, but pricier in season and ferry dependent for any mainland excursion.
Marsala and Lo Stagnone
kitesurfing or Marsala wine trips
Base here only if the trip centres on the lagoon or the cellars, as it is further from Erice, Segesta and Zingaro.
Think twice about
- Train and bus station and port-industrial fringes
Poorly lit and deserted late at night rather than dangerous. There is no reason to base here or walk it late when a taxi costs a few euros.
- Peripheral residential districts toward Paceco
No visitor infrastructure and nothing to see. Listings advertised as Trapani from several kilometres out should be checked carefully on a map.

Is Trapani safe?
- Trapani is safe by European standards. Main risks are petty theft in crowds, rental car break-ins at trailheads, and heat on walks.
- Carry serious water and start early for Zingaro, Segesta and Cofano, and wear water shoes in rocky Egadi coves.
- Centro ZTL cameras fine drivers months later. Ask your hotel for the permitted route and parking before arrival.
Trapani travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Fish by weight is the main bill trap. Ask the total price for the fish in front of you, cooked, before agreeing.
- Avoid centro and lungomare restaurants with photo menus, a tout and no Trapanesi inside at 21:00.
- Do not rush Erice, Segesta and the saline into one coach style day. Split them across two days.
Getting around Trapani: public transport and more
- Walk the centro end to end in about 25 minutes. AST buses cover San Giuliano and the funivia base.
- No car is needed for town, Egadi and Erice days. Rent one only for Zingaro, Segesta, Scopello, Cofano and Mozia days.
- Liberty Lines hydrofoils are foot passenger only and weather sensitive. Book direct and screenshot confirmations.
