Things to do in Tegucigalpa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tegucigalpa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, the best window, with December to February the sweet spot of green hills and cool nights.
Semana Santa empties the capital and closes businesses, but Comayagua's sawdust carpets are a national treasure.
Rainy season with afternoon downpours and muddy trails. A drier canicula spell often comes in late July to August.
Typically the wettest and least rewarding months, with hurricane season able to disrupt onward Bay Islands travel.

El Hatillo
quiet, views and excursions
A leafy hillside suburb on the La Tigra road, lovely with a dedicated driver but thin on hotels and car dependent.
Think twice about
- Comayaguela
West bank twin city. Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel here for gang violence and high crime. Do not sleep or wander here.
- Historic Centre as a base
Visit the museums and churches by day by taxi. Its streets empty after business hours and walking there at night is not advised.
- Suyapa and the university periphery as a base
The basilica is a daytime pilgrimage visit by taxi, not a base. There is no visitor infrastructure and the area has a robbery history.
- Toncontin airport and bus terminal surroundings
Transit space, not traveller space. Use hotel arranged vehicles for the airport and first class bus terminals.

Is Tegucigalpa safe?
- Withdraw cash at ATMs inside shopping centres, in daylight, in small amounts.
- Street walking after dark is not advised anywhere in Tegucigalpa, including between a restaurant and a hotel.
- Base in Palmira or the Lomas corridor, visit the historic centre and Suyapa by day by taxi, and avoid Comayaguela.
- Do not resist a robbery. Carry a small amount of cash to hand over and keep passport and cards secured at the hotel.
- Avoid demonstrations and crowds, which can close roads near the Centro Civico and Boulevard Los Proceres.
Tegucigalpa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Villa Roy museum is closed to the public with structural damage, despite older guide listings.
- The National Gallery is worthwhile only paired with the identity museum, not as a headline sight alone.
- Skip market shopping in Comayaguela, where pickpockets and grab and run theft are documented. Buy crafts in Valle de Angeles.
- El Picacho charges separately for elements inside the park, so carry small lempira notes.
- Any night tour other than the organised El Picacho evening visit should be refused.
Getting around Tegucigalpa: public transport and more
- Use hotel taxis or radio dispatched taxis as the default, agree the fare first, and note the driver's name.
- Never hail a street taxi and never take a collective taxi, which local safety guidance flags for assaults on passengers.
- Uber rides operate in Tegucigalpa but supply is thin at quiet hours, so keep a hotel taxi as the main plan.
- Do not self drive in the city, use first class direct buses by day between cities, and arrange airport pickup through your hotel.
- Short daylight walks inside Palmira or the Lomas corridor are the local pattern. Everywhere else, and after dark anywhere, take a car.
