Things to do in Taveuni
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Taveuni
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season shoulders: usually excellent walking and diving, fewer crowds and lower prices than the July and August peak.
Driest and most reliable months, and the busiest and priciest; small properties and dive boats fill.
Wet season begins and cyclone season opens; waterfalls surge, trails muddy, and the tagimoucia flowering begins around the lake.
Hottest, wettest months with the highest cyclone risk; the quietest island, only for flexible and insured travellers.
The season turns late in the month, rain eases, and the island greens up ahead of the dry season.
What's on
- Tagimoucia flowering season roughly October to January
Fiji's national flower blooms around Lake Tagimaucia, the one true natural event to time the lake trek around.
- Fiji Day 10 October
National holiday marked in Somosomo and Waiyevo as across Fiji.
- Diwali October or November, by the Hindu calendar
Celebrated by the island's Indo-Fijian community around Naqara and Waiyevo with lights and sweets.
Best things to do in Taveuni
Rainbow Reef
A tidal strait reef of soft coral walls and bommies off Taveuni, the diving that made Fiji famous for soft corals.
Tavoro Waterfalls
Three waterfalls on one forest track in Bouma, each with a swimming pool, the first an easy walk from the village.
Lavena Coastal Walk
A shore and rainforest walk from Lavena village up a river gorge to Wainibau Falls, reached by wading and a short swim.
Waitavala Natural Waterslide
A stream polished into natural rock slides and pools near Waiyevo, great fun and unsafe after heavy rain.
Waitabu Marine Park
A village run no fishing reserve since 1998, snorkelled with local guides over recovered reef and big fish.
Lake Tagimaucia
A crater lake reached by a long guided trek, home to the rare tagimoucia flower that grows almost nowhere else.
International Date Line Marker
A marked sign on the 180 degree meridian where you can stand with a foot in today and a foot in tomorrow.
Wairiki Catholic Mission
The historic Holy Cross Church at Wairiki, famed for French stained glass and an outstanding Sunday choir.
Where to stay in Taveuni
Matei and the north coast
first trips, divers, widest choice
By Matei Airport, with the luxury resorts, the boutique beach stay, the mid range lodge and the independent dive operator.
Waiyevo and Somosomo
dive resorts, town services, local life
The island's town side, with the hospital, market and shops, two dive resorts and the cheapest beachfront bures at Wairiki.
The south and Lavena
Bouma on the doorstep, quiet, walking first trips
The waterfalls and coastal walk end of the island, far from the airport and reef boats, with one full dive resort and one village lodge.
Separate islands near Taveuni
private island splurges
Qamea and Matangi are separate private islands reached by boat from Matei, booked as stays in themselves, not as Taveuni bases.
Think twice about
- Lavena and the far south as a sole base for a diving or short trip
Not unsafe, just impractical as a sole base: a long, rough road from Matei Airport and the reef boats, almost no shops or restaurants, and services that pause in bad weather. Stay there for Bouma, not for everything.
- Any base booked without a meal plan outside Matei
Outside the Matei strip there is almost nowhere independent to eat, so a room without meals can leave you stranded at night. Take the meal plan or confirm the resort restaurant before booking.

Is Taveuni safe?
- Cyclone season runs November to April; in those months use flexible bookings and real insurance and follow official warnings.
- No swimming, sliding or river walks during or after heavy rain; Taveuni rivers rise fast and the falls and slide become lethal in flood.
- Dive conservatively in the Somosomo Strait currents and carry evacuation insurance; there is no decompression chamber on the island and the hospital at Waiyevo is small.
- Bring prescription medicines, sunscreen and dive spares from Nadi or Suva, carry cash in small notes, and do not rely on cards or ATMs outside resorts and the town side.
Taveuni travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating the International Date Line Marker as a destination rather than a ten minute photo stop on a Waiyevo drive.
- Booking Qamea or Matangi expecting to be on Taveuni; both are separate islands reached by boat.
- Assuming a restaurant scene exists outside Matei; most meals on this island are eaten where you sleep.
- Making the Great White Wall your only dive day, when tides and current can cancel or move it.
Getting around Taveuni: public transport and more
- Fly Fiji Link from Nadi to Matei in about 1 hour 20 minutes, or from Suva Nausori in about 1 hour on selected days, and build a buffer before long haul flights home.
- The Goundar Shipping ferry from Suva runs roughly twice a week and takes about 9 to 13 hours; a shorter strait crossing links Taveuni with Buca Bay for Savusavu.
- Hire taxis by the trip or day and agree the price first; resort transfers and waiting drivers are how most visitors reach Bouma and Lavena.
- Roads are slow and the east coast road can suffer in heavy rain, so allow an hour or more for cross island drives that look short on the map.
