Things to do in St Kitts
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit St Kitts
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak and best overall: driest, trade winds, calmest clearest seas. Highest prices. Includes the end of Sugar Mas in early January.
Shoulder sweet spot with the dry season tail, falling prices, thinner crowds and still good seas.
Hotter and more humid with lower rates, mango season, the Music Festival in June and Culturama on Nevis in late July to early August.
Worst months for most visitors: heart of hurricane season, highest rain risk and some places reduce hours or close.
Quiet return as rains ease and everything reopens, with Sugar Mas building from mid December.
What's on
- Sugar Mas (National Carnival) 11 December 2026 - 2 January 2027

Best things to do in St Kitts
Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park
A massive UNESCO fortress above the sea with ramparts, a small museum and the island's best panoramic view.
South Friars Bay
Calm Caribbean water, easy reef snorkelling and a strip of beach bars from polished to rustic.
Romney Manor
Pretty plantation gardens and the Caribelle Batik workshop, with Wingfield Estate ruins next door.
Timothy Hill Overlook
A free roadside ridge with the Atlantic on one side, the Caribbean on the other and Nevis ahead.
Cockleshell Beach
Pale sand and calm water facing Nevis, anchored by Reggae Beach Bar and watersports rentals.
Basseterre

Where to stay in St Kitts
Frigate Bay
first trip, all-round base
The hotel strip 10 minutes from Basseterre, with most hotels, restaurants, golf and the easiest taxis.
South East Peninsula / Christophe Harbour
luxury and quiet
Park Hyatt, villas and near empty beaches with Nevis in view, but a car or taxi for every dinner.
The Strip / South Frigate Bay
beach-bar evenings on foot
The Caribbean end of Frigate Bay puts South Friars and the Strip bars within walking distance.
Basseterre
short, practical or budget stay
Cheapest beds, the ferry and local food, but no resort beach for a week long base.
Kittitian Hill / north-west
deliberate retreat splurge
Farmed hills and calm at Belle Mont, booked instead of the beach strip, not as a base for it.
Nevis
split stay add-on
Three nights after St Kitts for Pinney's Beach and plantation inns, with even less nightlife and fewer flights.
Think twice about
- Downtown Basseterre as a holiday base
No good swimming beach in town, a duty free funnel on cruise days and quiet streets at night. Visit by day, sleep in Frigate Bay.
- Isolated north-coast and Atlantic-side rentals without a car
The sea is often too rough to swim and dinner, groceries and tour pickups are 20 plus minutes away.
- Port Zante / cruise terminal strip
Crowds and touting on ship days and a shuttered feel on other days, with no compensating beach.

Is St Kitts safe?
- Do not walk Basseterre side streets alone after dark. Taxi the few dollars back to Frigate Bay.
- Petty theft is the realistic risk. Lock patio doors, use the hotel safe and do not leave bags unattended.
- Vervet monkeys are wild animals. Admire them, do not hand feed them.
St Kitts travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Atlantic side beaches look Caribbean in listings and swim like the Atlantic. Check which coast your room is on.
- Port Zante duty free deals and dockside tour touts are the island's highest markup option.
- Agree a price before any monkey photo at Timothy Hill or beach bars.
- Summer sargassum can pile up on Atlantic and some peninsula beaches. South Friars and South Frigate Bay are the usual refuges.
Getting around St Kitts: public transport and more
- Rent a car if you will leave Frigate Bay more than twice. Driving is on the left and a temporary local licence is needed.
- Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in and keep your driver's number for return pickups.
- Minibuses are cheap along the main road for Basseterre to Frigate Bay hops by day, but do not solve the peninsula or late nights.
