Think twice about

Grittiest strip in Sofia with loitering, street drinking, scam taxis and pickpockets. Arrive and depart in daylight, do not base here.
- Fakulteta, Filipovtsi, Moderno Predgradie, Orlandovtsi and Hristo Botev
Deprived peripheral or industrial districts with no visitor infrastructure and poor lighting and transport. Ignore very cheap listings there.

Is Sofia safe?
- Pickpocketing at Zhenski Pazar, on crowded trams and metro, and in the NDK underpass. Watch bags in busy cafes.
- Fake plain clothes police asking to see your wallet: real police do not do this, walk to a shop or call 112.
- Violent crime against visitors is rare and the centre feels safe at night. Tap water is drinkable.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Sofia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Taxi scams are the top trap: no Uber, use Yellow, Taksime or OK Taxi apps or a hotel ordered car, and never a touting cab at the airport or stations.
- Restaurants with picture menus and touts on Vitosha Boulevard itself. Walk one street off to Shishman, Solunska or Angel Kanchev.
- Airport and station currency exchange booths, NDK ticket touts and rose sellers, and Vitoshka terraces charging for the view.
- Bulgaria is in euro changeover: check EUR or lev quoting, remember 1 euro equals 1.95583 lev, decline dynamic currency conversion, and check bills and sides.
Getting around Sofia: public transport and more
- Walk the compact centre. The metro has four lines, contactless tap works on metro, trams and buses, and Line 4 runs from the airport.
- Trams are charming but slower than the metro. Cyrillic signage is transliterated at main stops.
