Things to do in Socotra
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Socotra
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Season opens after the monsoon, seas settle and the island is at its greenest, with some rain possible late in the year.
Coolest and most settled window, best for the Shoab boat and Dihamri snorkelling, and the busiest for charter seats.
Bottle trees bloom in pink, most famously around Homhil and Dixam, with calm clear seas early and heat building through April.
Season tail: hot coasts, some operators still run departures early in the month, and the wind returns late in May.
South west monsoon: very strong winds, rough seas and no reliable tourist operation. Do not plan a visit.

Where to stay in Socotra
Hadibo
hotel nights at the start and end of a circuit
The capital holds the island's only real hotels, the market, money changers and the hospital, a short drive from the airport.
Airport road, Mori
early departures only
A single small hotel by Socotra Airport, useful for flight timing and for nothing else.
Circuit campsites
the week itself
Most nights are tents at protected area campsites such as Detwah, Arher, Dihamri, Aomak and Delisha, moving with the circuit.
Think twice about
- Mainland Yemen
Active civil war. The Cairo via Aden routing transits it and is not a practical tourist route to Socotra.
- Socotra in the monsoon, June to September
Very strong winds, rough seas, boats beached and no reliable tourist operation. The island is effectively closed to visitors.
- Military and checkpoint areas
Control of the island is contested and in transition after the January 2026 UAE withdrawal. Follow your guide at checkpoints and do not photograph military positions, the airport or officials.

- Print your visa approval and carry it with your passport; you need it to board in Abu Dhabi or Jeddah.
Is Socotra safe?
- There is no consular help available on the island, and mainland Yemen is in an active civil war. Control of Socotra itself is contested and in transition.
- In January 2026 about 600 tourists were stranded when flights stopped, and evacuated to Jeddah days later. Carry insurance that explicitly covers Socotra with medical evacuation, and a plan that does not depend on the next flight running.
- Medical care beyond Hadibo hospital is minimal. Carry a full medical kit, double prescription medicine, reef shoes and rehydration supplies.
Socotra travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- There is no luxury tier, no card infrastructure and no ATM to plan around; tours are prepaid and on island spending is cash in small US dollar notes.
- Alcohol is prohibited and unavailable; do not bring it. Drones are restricted and can be confiscated without written permission arranged in advance.
- Visas sold outside a verifiable operator may be invalid; unofficial Socotra visas are being sold.
Getting around Socotra: public transport and more
- All movement is by operator 4x4 on rough roads; there is no public transport, car rental or independent driving product for visitors.
- The charter fixes the trip length at a week, flight day to flight day, in the October to May season.
