Where to stay in San Miguel de Allende
Centro Histórico
first trip, all-round base
Walk to the Parroquia, restaurants and rooftops in under 15 minutes, with church bells and wedding noise as the trade off.
Guadiana / Parque Juárez
quiet, families and longer stays
Residential and greener around Juárez Park, calmer nights and a 10 to 15 minute walk to the Jardín.
San Antonio
longer stays, local feel
A lived in neighbourhood with bakeries and small restaurants, better rental value and a 15 to 20 minute walk in.
Guadalupe
art and creative stays
The mural neighbourhood, colourful and arty with cheaper guesthouses, well placed for Fábrica La Aurora.
Atascadero / El Mirador / Los Balcones
views, if fit and happy to taxi
Hills above Centro deliver the panorama and a steep walk home every time, so many walk down and taxi up.
Think twice about
- Highway strips on the Celaya, Dolores and Querétaro roads
Car dependent and unsafe to walk back at night on unlit, pavement free highway edges.
- Bus station / Calzada de la Estación corridor
Traffic heavy and charmless with a long uphill trudge to everything. Fine to arrive at, do not stay there.
- Steep Atascadero listings sold as 5 minutes to Centro
Five minutes often means downhill only. Check the map and slope, not the minutes.

Is San Miguel de Allende safe?
- Altitude is about 6,200 feet: hydrate, use sunscreen and take a gentle first day.
- Do not drink tap water. Hotels provide purified water and ice in established restaurants is fine.
- Cobbles are the main hazard: flat, grippy, closed shoes always, extra care when wet.
- Watch bags in markets and processions, use the hotel safe and take lit streets or a taxi at night. Emergency 911.
San Miguel de Allende travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Centro hotels actually up a steep hill or on a highway. Check the map, not marketing.
- Mercado de Artesanías has many mass produced trinkets among the gems. Sort before buying.
- Guanajuato's Mummy Museum as a day trip centrepiece: famous is not the best two hours.
- Mexico City as a day trip is technically possible and practically miserable.
Getting around San Miguel de Allende: public transport and more
- Walk Centro, cars are slower than feet on one way cobbles.
- Taxis are plentiful and cheap for hills, heat, rain and late nights. Keep small cash.
- Do not rent a car for a Centro trip. Hire a driver only for day trip days.
- No airport in town: Querétaro is closest, then León Bajío, then Mexico City by first class bus.
