Things to do in Riga, planned over three days
Best time to visit Riga
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak and worth it: terraces, canal boats, Jurmala swimming and open air concerts, with prices and stag density peaking in July.
Autumn is the local sweet spot: crowds and prices drop, parks turn and Sigulda colours peak mid October.
Winter is cold, dark, cheap and atmospheric, with snow, husky sledding, pirts and empty museums. Dress in thermals for standing outside.
Spring shoulder value: March is still winter, by late April and May canal parks bloom, terraces reopen and daylight stretches fast.
Best months overall with September: late May to June brings light and warmth before peak crowds.
Best months overall with late May to June: September brings value and calm.
Worst for most visitors: dark and wet, unless the Christmas market timing is right.
Worst for most visitors alongside November: coldest and darkest feeling, unless deliberately coming for winter Riga.

Where to stay in Riga
Quiet Centre / Centrs
first trip, all-round base
Riga's grandest Art Nouveau streets, best restaurants and cafes, calm at night and 10 to 15 minutes to Vecriga.
Vecriga (Old Town)
first, short 1 to 2 night stay
Everything on foot and maximum atmosphere early morning, but choose a courtyard room away from the bar cluster.
Berga Bazars / Opera and Freedom Monument edge of Centrs
splurge base
A pedestrian arcade of boutiques and restaurants and park front boulevards between Old Town and Art Nouveau.
Āgenskalns / Kalnciema (Pārdaugava)
repeat visits, longer stays, food-first trips
Wooden house streets, Āgenskalns Market and cheaper apartments, a tram or 10 minute ride over the bridge.
Miera iela / Brasa fringe
budget-local base
Creative strip with good cafes, residential streets and a tram to the centre in 10 minutes.
Kipsala
views and quiet
Wooden houses and hotels facing the Old Town skyline across the Daugava, if you accept a bridge walk.
Think twice about
- Livu Square / Kalku iela bar strip, Vecriga
Riga's stag party funnel, loud until 03:00 to 04:00 on summer weekends, with the most overpriced trap restaurants and tout bars.
- Maskavas Forštate beyond Spīķeri, south-east of Central Market and Central Station
Worth a daytime walk for the Academy of Sciences and old wooden streets, but poorly lit and quiet at night with few places to eat. Base elsewhere.
- Bolderaja, Sarkandaugava and Kengarags
Outer Soviet era estates, far out with industrial character, nothing to walk to and a 30 to 45 minute commute each way.

Is Riga safe?
- Pickpockets at Central Market, the station and tram doors, keep bags zipped.
- Never follow a promoter to a bar or windowless club, check drink prices before ordering and pay as you go, the historic tout bar scam still has a reduced form.
- Use Bolt rather than unmetered taxis. Emergency number 112. The centre is generally safe at night, including for solo women.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Riga travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Old Town trap restaurants on Kalku and Livu: picture menu plus a tout outside means walk, a menu in Latvian first is a good sign.
- Amber shops on every Old Town corner, the same goods are 30 percent plus cheaper at Central Market and much tourist amber is not amber.
- Large Daugava only river cruises over the smaller canal boats, and do not pay for both St Peter's and the Academy of Sciences viewing platform.
- Rozengrals medieval cellar is fun theatre, but locals rate the food below Milda and Ala at similar spend.
Getting around Riga: public transport and more
- Walk the centre end to end. Trams run on 90 minute e-tickets at about 1.50 euros via the Rigas Satiksme or Mobilly app, validate on boarding.
- Airport RIX is 20 to 30 minutes away: bus 22 is the cheap way, Bolt is about 10 to 15 euros. Use Bolt, not street taxis.
- Do not ride Bolt e-scooters on pavements in Vecriga. Trains from Central Station make Jurmala, Sigulda and Kemeri easy day trips, buy in the Vivi app.
