Is Providenciales safe?
- Most crime is concentrated on Providenciales, and police resources are limited.
- Lock villas and cars, use the safe, and never leave valuables in a car or unattended on a beach.
- After dark outside the resort strip, drive rather than walk and avoid isolated beaches.
- Carrying any firearm or ammunition, even a stray cartridge, is illegal and carries prison sentences from 12 years.
- No lifeguards anywhere: swim in marked zones, stay visible to boats and never snorkel alone in boat channels.
Providenciales travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Inflated taxi quotes and unlicensed boat or jet ski touts: agree prices first and book licensed operators.
- Timeshare-style pitches dressed as resort offers: decline politely once.
- Resort buffets at luxury prices and stale conch farm listings: the old farm closed years ago.
Getting around Providenciales: public transport and more
- Rent a car: there is no public bus, taxis are unmetered and priced per person, and little is walkable.
- Driving is on the left with roundabouts: take the first airport drive slowly.
- Grace Bay Road central strip is the only genuinely walkable stretch, and bicycles suit daylight hops only.
- Use TCI Ferry from Walkin Marina for North Caicos and domestic flights for Grand Turk and Salt Cay.
