Things to do in Pisa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Pisa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best weather, 18 to 26 degrees, long Lungarni evenings, everything open and crowds manageable with first or last Tower slots.
Prime again: students return in September with the heat broken, October adds new wine, mushrooms and boar.
Spring opens with Capodanno Pisano on 25 March, at spring prices before Easter crowds build.
Festival and heat season: June is Pisa's month, July and August run 28 to 34 degrees and some family businesses close around 15 August.
Quiet, cheap winter Pisa: cool and damp, walk in museums, lowest hotel prices, and the Viareggio Carnival in February to early March.
What's on
- Luminara di San Ranieri 16 June
About 70,000 candles outline the Lungarni palaces, bridges and churches, with floating candles on the Arno and fireworks to close.
- Palio di San Ranieri 17 June
Four crews in period colours race about 1,500 m against the current on the Arno for the city's historic quarters.
- Gioco del Ponte last Saturday of June
Costumed procession, then north and south bank teams push a heavy trolley on Ponte di Mezzo for possession of the bridge.
- Capodanno Pisano 25 March
Pisa's own New Year, kept until 1749: procession, heraldry, music and a ray of sun striking a marble egg in the Cathedral at noon.
- Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics late May / June in its year
Pisa, Venice, Genoa and Amalfi race replica galleons in rotation, roughly every four years in Pisa: check the rotation.
- Carnival of Viareggio February to early March
Giant satirical papier mache floats parade the Viareggio seafront, about 25 minutes by train from a quiet Pisa base.
Best things to do in Pisa
Piazza dei Miracoli
The full white marble ensemble of Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and Tower has a collective effect no single building matches.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
Climbing 296 steps inside the tilt gives a strange inner ear lean and a bell chamber view no photograph reproduces.
Pisa Cathedral
The Cathedral and its Opera Museum hold Pisa's best art: Pisano pulpits, original sculptures and treasures seen up close in calm rooms.
Baptistery of St. John
Italy's largest baptistery is worth it for sound: a custodian's few sung notes layer under the dome into a lasting chord.
Camposanto Monumentale
Quiet cloisters, Roman sarcophagi and restored Triumph of Death frescoes, paired with the Sinopie underdrawings opposite.
Museo delle Navi Antiche di Pisa
Real Roman ships with cargoes and sailors' belongings turn Pisa into a thousand year maritime story in uncrowded, air conditioned rooms.
Palazzo Blu
A restored blue palazzo with a permanent Pisan collection and large temporary shows that are often western Tuscany's best in a season.
Mura di Pisa
The restored medieval walls are an elevated walkway with rooftop views and a new angle on the Miracoli that most visitors never find.
Where to stay in Pisa
Santa Maria / north Lungarno
first trip, all-round base
University quarter with student cafes, Borgo Stretto and the Tower a ten minute stroll north, lively without being a party strip.
San Francesco / Santa Marta
local Pisa and value
East historic centre with the Vettovaglie market, night bars and daily Pisan life, fifteen minutes on foot to the Tower.
San Martino / Lungarno Gambacorti-Galilei
quiet, exhibitions and eating like a local
South bank calm near Palazzo Blu and the Navi Antiche museum, with lower prices for a twenty minute walk to the Tower.
Miracoli immediate perimeter
one-night, tower-maximising sprint
You can be on the square before the first coach, but you sleep in the souvenir funnel with the thinnest restaurant scene.
San Giuliano Terme / countryside
splurge escape and trips with a car
A historic spa village and farm stays with pools among olive groves, glorious for a road trip but a commute for a city break.
Think twice about
- Pisa Centrale station perimeter at night
Loitering, pickpocketing reports at the taxi rank and airport bus area, and an edgy underpass late. Use it for trains, sleep five to ten minutes north.
- Piazza delle Vettovaglie / Corso Italia late-night bar blocks
Not unsafe, but student nightlife noise until late on Thursday to Saturday in term time. Light sleepers should take the next street over.
- Marina di Pisa / Tirrenia as a Pisa base without a car
Pleasant seaside towns ten to fifteen kilometres from the city on a bus commute, for a beach that does not justify it outside high summer.
- Anywhere requiring driving into the centre daily
The historic centre is a camera enforced ZTL with scarce parking and car break in risk near tourist car parks. Park on the edge and walk.
Best restaurants in Pisa
Osteria dei Cavalieri
Pisa's consensus serious dinner in a 13th century tower house, with separate land and sea menus handled equally well.
La Pergoletta
A hidden courtyard classic with a pergola, cappellacci, cod fritters and unhurried service that Pisans keep for family occasions.
La Scaletta
Pisa's historic fish address for over 150 years: crudi, spaghetti allo scoglio, grilled catch and cacciucco style richness.
Trattoria Sant'Omobono
Pisan home cooking in a former church: bordatino, brachette with smoked herring, rabbit and cheap house wine among locals.
I Porci Comodi
Huge schiacciata sandwiches, porchetta with peppers and sharing boards of salumi and cheese: the best cheap lunch in central Pisa.
Pizzeria da Nando
The local name for cecina, chickpea batter baked in copper pans and folded into focaccia with grilled aubergine for a few euros.
Osteria del Tinti
A Pisan resident's nomination for typical Pisan cooking, best paired with a Vettovaglie aperitivo and a Lungarno walk.
L'Ostellino
Seasonal, locally sourced street food and generous platters of cold cuts and cheese from about ten euros, calmer than its famous rival.
Best coffee in Pisa
Filter Coffee Lab
Specialty coffee among the also excellent stops, a useful break from the trattoria circuit.

A flat, dedicated cycle path follows the old tram line to the sea at Marina di Pisa for a swim, fried fish and a golden hour ride back.

Lucca

Marina di Pisa
Pisa's own coast: fish restaurants at Marina, long paid lidos at Tirrenia and quieter Calambrone, with free stretches between.
Volterra
A windswept Etruscan hill town with the Guarnacci museum, Roman theatre and alabaster workshops, rewarding an early start by car or bus.
Certosa di Calci
A vast Carthusian charterhouse plus the university Natural History Museum, famous for its whale gallery and aquarium, ten kilometres east.
Best hotels in Pisa
Relais dell'Orologio
Palazzo luxury a few hundred metres from the Tower, small and romantic, and premium priced for Pisa.
Grand Hotel Duomo
Book it for position and the rooftop Tower view on Via Santa Maria, with rooms reviewers call dated and walls thin.
Hotel Pisa Tower
A garden hotel at the Miracoli edge, on a par with the mid range Via Santa Maria options.
Palazzo Feroci - Residenza d'Epoca
A restored palazzo with Medici era origins, suites with courtyard or terrace access, about 500 yards from the Miracoli.
Hotel Bologna
A historic centre stalwart about a twelve minute walk to the Miracoli, praised for position between station and sights.
NH Pisa
The reliable chain option useful for early trains and flights, though station side rooms should be vetted for noise.
Hotel Alessandro della Spina
A family hotel on the centre side of the station, good value like the hotels on the south bank.
Hotel Villa Kinzica
A villa hotel steps from the Tower with a family run feel and ZTL permit help noted in listings.
Is Pisa expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | €70 a person |

- June festival weekends fill hotels weeks ahead: book the room before the Tower ticket.

Is Pisa safe?
- Risks are petty: pickpocketing at Centrale, in Miracoli crowds and on station buses, distraction at ticket machines and car break ins near tourist parking.
- Use a front crossbody bag, keep phones away at machines, and never leave valuables visible in a car.
- Station underpasses feel edgy late: use lit Corso Italia and Lungarno routes. Emergency number 112.
Pisa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Reseller Tower tickets at 28 to 50 dollars plus for a 20 euro official slot: skip the line language is meaningless on a timed entry monument.
- Restaurants and souvenir stalls in the Miracoli funnel: photo menus and the city's weakest food at premium prices. Walk five minutes toward the centre.
- The forced perspective photo as the whole visit describes the two hour itinerary, not the city.
- Day tripping at the midday peak gives the hottest, most crowded version: arrive before 09:30 or after 16:00 and eat south of the Arno.
- Never leave luggage visible in a car near the Miracoli: use station or centre left luggage instead.
- Marina di Pisa is a local seafront with breakwaters and beach clubs, not a postcard cove or the Tuscan Riviera.
Getting around Pisa: public transport and more
- Walk almost everything: station to Tower is about 25 minutes through the centre, and Pisa San Rossore station is closer to the Miracoli.
- City LAM buses link Centrale, the centre and the Miracoli every few minutes: buy before boarding and validate.
- Airport Pisa Galileo Galilei is about 2 km away, five minutes by PisaMover shuttle to Centrale.
- Trains: Florence about 1 hour, Lucca about 25 to 30 minutes, Cinque Terre about 1.5 hours. Validate regional tickets before boarding.
- Bikes are the cheat code on flat terrain and the Trammino and San Rossore lanes: lock properly, bike theft is a student city constant.
