Things to do in Perugia
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Perugia
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall window: mild weather, green hills, Subasio and Tezio hiking at their best.
Festival peak and heat management: do sights early, pool, lake or Rocca cool in the afternoon.
Food travellers peak: harvest, new olive oil in November, mushrooms, game and EuroChocolate.
Quietest and cheapest: cold short days, emptiest gallery and the best black truffle menus.

Best things to do in Perugia
Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria

Rocca Paolina
A buried medieval quarter inside a papal fortress, crossed free on public escalators between the lower city and the summit.
Perugia Sotterranea
Guided layers below the cathedral hill, extending the Rocca story into Etruscan and Roman Perugia.
Piazza IV Novembre
The centre living room: Fontana Maggiore, the Duomo and Palazzo dei Priori in one square, best on the evening passeggiata.
Casa del Cioccolato Perugina

Museo-Laboratorio di Vetrate Artistiche Moretti Caselli

Where to stay in Perugia
Centro Storico
first trip, all-round base
Everything walkable along the Corso Vannucci spine, with Rocca escalators and Minimetrò Pincetto solving arrival with luggage.
Borgo XX Giugno / San Pietro & Elce / Porta Sole
longer stays, repeat visitors, drivers
Centro edge neighbourhoods with lower rates and easier parking, trading a 10 to 15 minute uphill walk to the piazza.
Just outside the walls with a pool
families, summer stays
Larger hotels a short walk or escalator ride below the summit, with pools, parking and family rooms the centro palazzi cannot offer.
Think twice about
- Fontivegge / main station quarter
Drab station surroundings, poorly lit side streets and a reputation for petty crime and street drug dealing. Pass through, do not base.
- Pian di Massiano / stadium and Minimetrò terminus area
A sports and retail periphery with nothing walkable in the evening. Fine for parking or a drivers stop, wrong for a city stay.
- Far periphery agriturismi without a car
Listings 8 to 15 km out can mean no bus after dinner and expensive taxi rides. Filter by actual map pin, not the word Perugia.

- Galleria Nazionale needs a timed slot only in festival weeks and free Sunday peaks: otherwise arrive at opening.
Is Perugia safe?
- Centro storico is generally safe and lively late, with pickpocket awareness needed in festival crowds.
- Fontivegge station quarter: transit by Minimetrò or train with normal station awareness, do not walk its back streets late with luggage.
- Isolated areas around Pian di Massiano are empty, not dangerous, after events: leave with the crowd or by Minimetrò.
- Emergency number throughout Italy: 112.
Perugia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Perugina on a Saturday: the factory is idle and tours are materially worse. Weekday or not at all.
- Corso Vannucci photo menu restaurants charge for the address: one lane off, food improves and prices drop.
- Buy truffle only from reputable botteghe with labelled origin: most cheap truffle oil is synthetic aroma.
- Driving into the centro to drop bags triggers automated ZTL fines: use Minimetrò, escalators or your hotel plate procedure.
- Check the Marmore water release timetable before setting the date: arriving when the falls are off is avoidable.
Getting around Perugia: public transport and more
- Minimetrò runs from Pian di Massiano free parking via Fontivegge station to Pincetto in the centro, every 2 to 3 minutes.
- Free public escalators climb inside Rocca Paolina from Piazza Partigiani to Piazza Italia: use them, locals do.
- Trains from Perugia Centrale serve Florence, Rome and the Foligno line for Assisi, Spello and Spoleto: do not confuse it with Ponte San Giovanni.
- Park free at Pian di Massiano and ride up: cars are a liability in the centro, with ZTL cameras and expensive garages.
- Everything in the centro is within 20 minutes and none of it is flat: wear shoes with grip, not fashion soles.
