Things to do in Parma
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Parma
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: 14 to 21C, opera season in full swing, countryside green and dairies and castles at their best.
Summer: hot and humid, city empties in August with many closures. Early dairy visits and shade work best.
Autumn peak: prosciutto festival and gastronomic September, then Festival Verdi. Book everything early.
Winter: cold, foggy, delicious and cheaper, with bollito season and opera from January. Late November is worst.

Is Parma safe?
- Pickpockets at the station and on busy trains and buses are the main real risk.
- At night use lit main streets instead of station underpasses, park edges and river shortcuts.
- Emergency number is 112 for everything.
- No area needs avoiding in daylight; there is no severe encampment district to warn bases away from.
Parma travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Piazza Garibaldi tourist facing corners charge a premium; the best rooms are 2 to 5 minutes away.
- Sweet fizzy export Lambrusco is not the real dry food wine of Parma.
- Paying over 110 euros for a combined cheese and ham bus tour when direct, cycle or drive options exist.
- Labirinto della Masone as a standalone maze trip; go as a Fontanellato day.
- Parma as a rushed day trip checkbox misses the dairy, Regio, castles and evening passeggiata.
Getting around Parma: public transport and more
- Trains are the way in: about 1 hour from Milan and 35 to 45 minutes from Bologna.
- Walk the flat compact centro; the station to Duomo walk is about 15 minutes.
- Do not drive into the ZTL centro. Park at Toschi, Goito or Duc and walk.
- Taxis are rank based at the station and Piazza Garibaldi; hotels will call one.
