Is Paracas safe?
- Paracas is rated among Peru's safest small destinations. Keep phones off cafe table edges and use licensed taxis late at night.
- Do not wander alone on unlit beach or desert roads, swim only at sheltered La Mina and never at Playa Roja, and follow Capitania port closures.
Paracas travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Separate Candelabra tours and VIP malecon ceviche buffets. You see the geoglyph from the Ballestas boat anyway.
- Swimming off the El Chaco town beach, a working port. Swim at La Mina and use hotel pools instead.
- Midday reserve buses with no Lagunillas lunch and no La Mina swim, plus unreviewed buggy, ATV and paraglide touts on the pier.
- Afternoon Ballestas boats and Huacachina lagoon swimming. Go in the morning, and go to Huacachina for sunset dunes.
Getting around Paracas: public transport and more
- Lima to Paracas is 260 km, 3.5 to 4 hours by Peru Hop or Cruz del Sur bus, then a short taxi to El Chaco.
- El Chaco is walkable end to end in 15 minutes. The resort strip is a 5 to 10 minute taxi, agree the fare first.
- Reserve, Huacachina, Ica and Tambo need a tour, driver, rental car or prebooked transfer. Arrange the return before you go.
