Things to do in Ouagadougou
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ouagadougou
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season and the best window, rainless with highs near 30 to 35C, though harmattan dust hazes the sky from December.
Hot dry season with highs of 38 to 42C peaking in April, the worst time for a first trip despite the mangoes.
Rainy season with afternoon storms and muddy rural roads, August wettest, the city green but travel disrupted.
Rains fade, harvests begin and SIAO lands in its years in late October, a strong shoulder month.

Koulouba / Centre and ZACA
first visit, museums and restaurants
Near the cathedral, music museum, markets and FESPACO quarter, with the largest choice of central hotels and dining.

space, quiet and security conscious stays
Wide avenues, ministries and larger newer hotels with big pools, at the cost of a taxi ride to everything central.
Zogona
budget guesthouses and local feel
The university quarter with the city's best loved small guesthouses, calmer than the centre and a taxi ride from downtown.
Think twice about
- Arrondissement 11, Balkiui and Rayongo (Dayongo)
Avoid night-time travel there. Do not base there.
- Far peripheral quarters and unlit outskirts
Distance from the centre, poor lighting and thin taxi coverage make them a bad base in any window.
- Immediate surroundings of military installations and the presidency
Checkpoint and security zones subject to sudden closures and serious incidents. Pass through by day if needed, do not base beside them.

Is Ouagadougou safe?
- Burkina Faso is currently unsafe for travel due to crime, kidnapping, terrorism and health risks, so do not go until conditions change.
- Travel outside Ouagadougou is currently not possible safely, and night travel to Balkiui and Rayongo in Arrondissement 11 should be avoided.
- Take malaria prophylaxis and meningitis belt vaccination advice from a travel clinic, and carry medical and evacuation insurance in writing.
- Drink bottled or treated water, hydrate against harmattan dust and March to May heat, and keep night movement to vetted cars.
Ouagadougou travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Buy serious bronze, weaving and leather at the Village Artisanal rather than treating the Grand Marché as efficient retail.
- At Bangr-Weogo, brace for the small zoo enclosures and agree any camera or guide charge before paying it.
- Never plan Laongo or the Monument of National Heroes at midday from March to May, when heat peaks.
- Do not photograph the Moro-Naba court, markets or artisans without asking, and never photograph military or government sites.
Getting around Ouagadougou: public transport and more
- Agree taxi fares before you get in, carry small notes, and give destinations as landmarks plus a phone number.
- Use a vetted car and driver arranged through your hotel for Laongo, Bazoulé and Manéga, and never travel intercity at night.
- Walk early in the morning or for short central hops only, as heat, dust and traffic make walking poor by mid morning.
- Confirm an airport transfer with your hotel in advance, especially for evening arrivals.
