Things to do in Novi Sad
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Novi Sad
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring joint best window: warm, green, terraces full and Fruska Gora hiking at its best. June is the wettest month.
Beach season with Strand in full swing, but hot and sometimes oppressive. Do the fortress in mornings and at sunset.
Autumn joint best window: warm not hot, harvest season. Best months run mid May to late June and September to mid October.
Winter quiet, cold and cheap: kafana and theatre season, with Strand and boat trips dormant.

Where to stay in Novi Sad
Stari Grad / City Centre
first trip, all-round base
Everything except the fortress is within 15 minutes walk, with the best restaurants and Laze Teleckog bars.
Petrovaradin
couples, repeat visitors and photographers
Quiet cobbled lower town under the fortress for dawn and dusk walks, 20 minutes walk to the centre.
Liman / the Danube side
families and longer stays
Closest to Strand, the Kej and Ribarsko Ostrvo, with more space and parking at better value.
Grbavica
week-plus budget stays
Lived in quarter near the university with cafes, bakeries and markets, and very little hotel stock.
Think twice about
- Detelinara / Novo Naselje and the industrial refinery edge
Nothing to see or walk to and a bus ride to every meal. Listings there are cheap for a reason.
- Around the main railway and bus station (Banatić)
Functional but charmless and traffic heavy, and sombre around the 2024 memorials. Stay only for an early train.
- Ground-floor rooms on Laze Telečkog in summer
Not a safety problem, a noise problem. The pedestrian core stays lively until late.

- Watch bags in crowded markets and events as anywhere. The centre is busy and well lit late.
- Protests and commemorations after the 2024 station collapse can close streets, largest around 1 November. Give them a respectful berth.
- Use taxis after salas and winery days rather than driving provincial roads after rakija.

- Planning around EXIT in Novi Sad in 2026. It is not happening there.

- Swimming into the Danube current away from the supervised Strand area.
