Things to do in Niamey
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Niamey
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, the cool dry season with highs near 32 to 36 degrees and the wrestling championship season.
Harmattan dust haze brings red sunsets, dry skin and possible flight delays, but winter remains the best window.
Worst for heat, building to April and May peaks above 40 degrees that punish any midday sightseeing.
Rainy season, heaviest in July and August, with flooded streets, cut roads and higher malaria risk.
A hot humid shoulder month, possible but not pleasant.

Think twice about
- Grand Marché and main bus station perimeter
Pickpocketing, congestion and noise, and open air markets are currently off limits to US government staff. Visit in the morning with a guide, do not sleep there.
- Far outskirts and unlit residential sprawl
Nothing walkable, long dark taxi rides and no visitor infrastructure, whether towards the outer airport road or across the river beyond Lamordé.
- Anywhere outside Niamey in Tillabéri and the border regions
These areas are named for attacks and kidnappings, military escorts are required for foreigners, and consular help cannot be provided outside Niamey.

Is Niamey safe?
- Do not go now: crime, unrest, terrorism, health risks and kidnapping make Niger unsafe to visit at present.
- Foreigners outside Niamey require Nigerien military escorts, and consular help outside Niamey cannot be provided.
- Restaurants and open air markets are off limits to US government staff in Niger at present.
- Niger is high malaria risk year round, so prophylaxis, a net and evacuation insurance that covers Niger are preconditions.
Niamey travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not skip the National Museum for its zoo, just skip the zoo corner and keep expectations low there.
- Do not treat the Grand Marché as a casual solo stroll with a camera out.
- Reject any desert day trip sold beyond Kouré in anything like present conditions.
- Never photograph bridges, military or police positions, the airport or official buildings, and always ask people first.
- Do not sightsee at midday from March to June, when Niamey is a dawn and dusk city.
Getting around Niamey: public transport and more
- Use a hired car with a local driver arranged through your hotel or a reputable operator, not self drive.
- Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare in French in CFA francs before getting in and carry small notes.
- Avoid motorcycle taxis on safety grounds, and plan all movements for daylight with a car back after dark.
- French is the operating language, and a proper greeting with a handshake opens every door in Niamey.
