Things to do in Mopti
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mopti
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season, the best window: low water, passable roads, retreating flood, with January and February the sweet spot.
Hot dry season with extreme heat above 40 degrees in April and May. Sightsee at dawn and drop long road days first.
Rains and rising water: roads degrade, malaria risk peaks, and the delta flood begins to remake the landscape.
Peak flood and pinasse season: boat travel to Djenne and the delta at its best, while road crossings depend on the same flood.

- Standard travel policies generally exclude Mali; check that cover explicitly includes it, including evacuation.
- Malaria is a year round risk, highest in and after the rains. Prophylaxis, nets and repellent are not optional.
- Medical facilities outside Bamako are very limited. Carry personal medication in full and hold evacuation cover that explicitly covers Mali.
- Ask before photographing people and never photograph checkpoints, armed positions, the airport or officials.
Mopti travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Port boat touts turn a per boat price into per person and a short trip into a long one. Name destination, duration and total price first.
- Large banknotes cannot be changed at the port or fish market. Carry small XOF notes.
- Listings outlive hotels and restaurants in Mopti. Confirm every pick is open on the day through a guide or hotel.

- Do every excursion by vetted vehicle or boat, in daylight, arranged through a hotel or operator.
