Things to do in Monrovia
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Monrovia
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the best window, with passable roads, the best Robertsport surf and the clearest forest trails.
The sweet spot inside the dry season for a first trip, and the only window recommended for Kpatawee and Sapo.
Shoulder months with rain building or easing, workable with flexibility but excursions can be lost to washed roads.
Heavy rains bring urban flooding in Monrovia and make unpaved roads genuinely difficult, so excursions are unreliable.
What's on
- Independence Day 26 July
Liberia's biggest national holiday, with parades and ceremonies at the Centennial Pavilion, falling in the heavy rains.
- National Unification Day 14 May
A national holiday promoting unity among Liberia's ethnic groups, marked by cultural events and ceremonies.
- Flag Day 24 August
A public holiday honouring the Liberian flag, with school and civic parades in Monrovia in the rainy season.
- Christmas and New Year 25 December to 1 January
Warmly celebrated with church services and family gatherings, and usefully in the dry season, so book early.
Best things to do in Monrovia
Liberian National Museum
Start here for the full story of Liberia, from its Indigenous peoples to independence and the modern republic.
Providence Island
The 1822 landing ground of the first freed American settlers, and in effect the founding site of Liberia itself.

Where to stay in Monrovia
Mamba Point
first trip, calmest and most secure base
The diplomatic ocean side quarter with the US Embassy area, the best hotel restaurants and the quietest streets.
Sinkor
restaurants, business and value range
The Tubman Boulevard spine with embassies, supermarkets and hotels at every tier from luxury to cheap.
Congo Town and Paynesville
space, longer stays and the airport road
Newer larger properties east of Sinkor toward the airport, useful for resort space but you will drive everywhere.
Robertsfield airport area
late arrivals and dawn departures only
The Farmington by Roberts International Airport suits a first or last night, not a Monrovia sightseeing base.
Think twice about
- West Point
A dense informal settlement with severe overcrowding and poor sanitation, no visitor lodging or infrastructure. Do not base there or wander in for photographs.
- Central downtown, Waterside and Bushrod Island corridor
Visit Waterside Market in the morning with a guide, but do not sleep there. Lodging serves traders, streets are chaotic and poorly lit, and night walking is unsafe.
- Deep Paynesville commercial sprawl
Fine to pass through and eat, but disorganised, traffic bound and poorly lit as a first trip base compared with Mamba Point or Sinkor.

| Classic | $200 a person |
| Splurge | $400 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Robertsport: weeks ahead
- Kwepunha Surf Retreat: weeks ahead
- Libassa Ecolodge: a few days ahead
- Kpatawee Waterfall: a few days ahead
- Sapo National Park: months ahead
- Buchanan: a few days ahead
- Mamba Point Hotel: weeks ahead
- The Cape Hotel: a few days ahead
- Arrange your visa and yellow fever certificate early, as most visitors need both before travel.
- Book hotels, a trusted driver, Robertsport lodges and any Sapo expedition well ahead, while city sights need no tickets.
- Get Libassa and Kpatawee prices confirmed in writing, as recent guests report on arrival price disputes and double booking.
- Arrange malaria prophylaxis, prescription supplies and medical evacuation insurance before you travel.
Is Monrovia safe?
- Liberia carries risks of crime, unrest and health problems.
- Armed robbery is described as common in urban areas, crowded markets and public beaches, so keep phones and valuables away there.
- Do not travel outside the capital or between counties after dark, airport transfers excepted.
- Health care is inadequate by US standards and malaria is endemic, so carry evacuation insurance and sealed drinking water.
Monrovia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Ducor is a 30 minute viewpoint and symbol, not a half day interior tour of an unsafe shell.
- Providence Island without a guide is a quiet overgrown site, so the narration is the product.
- Hotel star ratings in Monrovia are local claims, so judge on recent reviews, generator and water reliability, and location.
- A beautiful empty beach may be empty because of dangerous surf, not because you got lucky.
Getting around Monrovia: public transport and more
- Roberts International Airport is roughly 45 to 60 km away, so arrange a hotel transfer or known driver before you land.
- Hire a car and driver by the day through your hotel, and agree the rate, fuel and finishing time in advance.
- Walk only short daylight stretches in Mamba Point and Sinkor, and drive everywhere at night.
- Carry small US bills in good condition, as hotels and top restaurants price in dollars and cards work mainly at big hotels.
