Things to do in Mogadishu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mogadishu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Jilaal under the north-east monsoon: the driest, clearest window and the best beach weather of the year.
Gu, the long rains: heavy showers, mud and local flooding, with greener country inland and bent movement plans.
Hagaa under the south-west monsoon: persistent wind, blowing sand and rough, dangerous surf. A walk and look beach season.
Deyr, the short rains: lighter and less reliable than Gu, easing by December into the Jilaal window.
What's on
- Eid al-Fitr Moveable, end of Ramadan
Multi day family festival closing Ramadan. Offices, sites and some restaurants close. The month varies by year.

Multi day family festival following the Hajj period. Expect closures and heavy family visiting. The month varies by year.
- Somali Independence Day 1 July
Anniversary of independence in 1960, the date chosen for the National Museum reopening in 2020. A national, official occasion, with heightened security in the capital.
Best things to do in Mogadishu
National Museum of Somalia
Reopened in July 2020 after thirty closed years, with only part of its floors open and most of its old collection lost.
Bakara Market
The largest market in Somalia, a sprawling working commercial district, visited briefly and guided, not browsed alone.
Mogadishu Lighthouse
An Italian colonial lighthouse, deactivated in the 1990s and partly collapsed in 2023, viewed from outside only.
Fakhr al-Din Mosque
A coral stone mosque of 1269 with two conical domes, among the oldest Islamic buildings on the East African coast.
Arba'a Rukun Mosque
The Four Corners mosque of Shangani, built around 1268, the stone heart of Mogadishu's medieval elite quarter.
Jama'a Xamar Weyne
The Friday mosque of Hamar Weyne, its site dated to 1238, set below street level and historically the quarter's heart.
Mogadishu Cathedral
The roofless ruin of the Italian cathedral of 1928, the clearest single statement of the colonial layer and the war.
Hamar Weyne Fish Market
The city's surviving fish market by the port, where porters carry tuna, kingfish, marlin and shark to the auction hall.
Where to stay in Mogadishu
Aden Adde International Airport complex and Airport Road
default base in any near future window
The fortified airport zone with the embassies and the airport hotels, from which escorted movements into the city are organised.
Maka al-Mukarama and KM4 corridor
city base in a later, improved window
The commercial spine toward the centre, closer to Bakara and the old town, with the journalists hotel at KM4.
Villa Somalia area
official stays on a current operator assessment only
The palace district with the SYL Hotel, the museum and the theatre, prominent and therefore repeatedly targeted.
Think twice about
- All of Mogadishu today, for leisure travel
Mogadishu faces active conflict, terrorism and kidnapping risks, and hotels and public places have been attacked. Save this trip for when that changes.
- Bakara Market as an unescorted wander
A vast, security-sensitive working market. Any future visit is guided, in daylight, and only as deep as the guide allows.
- Roads out of the city and the Jazira road after dark
Any excursion should be a daylight, guide led, there and back trip. No evening lingering outside the compounds.
- Checkpoints, the port fence and the airport perimeter as photo stops
Never photograph checkpoints, armed positions, the port fence or security arrangements at the airport or government buildings.
Best restaurants in Mogadishu
The Village Restaurant
Chef Ahmed Jama's Somali dining rooms, grilled kingfish and spiced rice, bombed once and defiantly reopened.
Salsabiil Restaurant
A listed city restaurant for ordinary Somali cooking at local prices, confirmed on the day through your hotel.
Summer Cafe and Restaurant
A listed cafe at KM5 for Somali coffee, juices and a mixed menu, the named cafe pause on a KM corridor day.
Outdoor things to do in Mogadishu
Liido Beach
The city's own beach, where families picnic on Fridays and football fills the sand, visited in daylight in company.
Jazira Beach
The quieter southern beach past the airport, with dunes and fishing boats, a daylight there and back visit only.
Laas Geel
Neolithic rock art of cattle and herders near Hargeisa, reached only from the Hargeisa side with permit and escort.
Best hotels in Mogadishu
Decale Hotel
The hotel inside the airport perimeter, the default official base where you can land and sleep without leaving the wire.
Jazeera Palace Hotel
The established large hotel by the airport, home to diplomats and delegations behind serious walls and screening.
Peace Hotel
A long running guarded hotel near the airport, the mid range base used by journalists, researchers and NGO travellers.
SYL Hotel
The officials hotel by the presidential palace, attacked in March 2024 and listed as temporarily closed since.
Sahafi International Hotel
The journalists hotel at KM4, the city base with the deepest traveller track record, attacked in the past and rebuilt.
Is Mogadishu expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | $120 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | $250 a person |
| Splurge | $500 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Laas Geel: weeks ahead
- Decale Hotel: weeks ahead
- Jazeera Palace Hotel: weeks ahead
- Peace Hotel: a few days ahead
- Sahafi International Hotel: a few days ahead
- Book any Mogadishu stay only through a reputable Somali operator who can confirm that month that the hotel is operating and how it is secured.
- Arrange the Laas Geel permit, vehicle, guide and police escort from Hargeisa well ahead. It is not a Mogadishu day trip.
Is Mogadishu safe?
- Do not travel now: save this for a future trip, as every movement in the city today is by escorted vehicle between secure compounds.
- Movement outside the Mogadishu airport complex requires security clearance, a movement plan and an escort, and consular support in person is not available in the city.
- Hotels, checkpoints, beachfront venues and government buildings in Mogadishu have all been bombed in al-Shabaab attacks.
- Medical facilities are limited and do not meet US or UK standards. Carry personal medication in full and confirm evacuation cover explicitly covers Somalia.
- At the beaches, respect the monsoon surf. There is no lifeguard system, and the Hagaa season sea is not a swimming sea.
Mogadishu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Restaurant and hotel listings outlive the businesses in Mogadishu. Confirm every pick is open on the day through a guide or hotel.
- Cards and ATMs cannot be relied on. Carry clean, undamaged US dollar notes in a spread of denominations.
- Climbing the ruined lighthouse was described by older traveller accounts. It partly collapsed in 2023. Do not climb it.
Getting around Mogadishu: public transport and more
- Move only by vehicle arranged through an operator or hotel, with the driver and escort the operator specifies.
- Checkpoints, traffic and cleared timings set the day, not kilometres. The airport run is a planned movement.
- Do every excursion as a daylight trip and be back inside the compound before dark.
