- Watch for pickpocketing around markets, Praca Estrela, the harbour and festival crowds, and keep cash split.
- Avoid unlit isolated areas and beaches after dark, and take a taxi home late.
- Obey beach flags and swim at Laginha or the Baia das Gatas lagoon, not on exposed Praia Grande.
- Carry full insurance including evacuation and bring medication for the whole trip.
Mindelo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Belem Tower replica disappoints as a headline attraction, so keep it to a harbour walk stop.
- A rushed Santo Antao coach circuit spends longer in the vehicle than in the Paul Valley.
- Festival period gouging affects rooms and taxis, so confirm rates in writing and agree fares first.
Getting around Mindelo: public transport and more
- Walk the flat centre, about 1.5 km from Praca Nova to Laginha, and agree taxi fares before moving.
- Use alugueres from Praca Estrela for Salamansa, Baia das Gatas, Calhau and Sao Pedro, leaving when full.
- The Santo Antao ferry takes about one hour and runs roughly twice daily, but can be cancelled for rough seas.
- Fuel stations are only in Mindelo, so leave town full if you hire a car or motorbike.
