Things to do in Milne Bay
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Milne Bay
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The drier south-east trade wind period: calmest seas, most reliable diving visibility and easiest boat and road days. Rain still falls in every month.
Trobriand yam harvest and Milamala period, centred on July, accessible only on the thin Losuia flight pattern.
National Kenu and Kundu Festival in Alotau, 6 to 8 November in the 2026 listing: rooms and flights fill, weather turning wetter.
The wetter north-west monsoon: heavier rain, rougher crossings, highest disruption risk, and cyclone season in the background.
What's on
- National Kenu and Kundu Festival 6 to 8 November 2026
Canoe racing, kundu drums, sing-sings and crafts in Alotau, celebrating Milne Bay maritime heritage since 2003.
- Milamala Yam Festival, Kiriwina June to August, centred on July, harvest dependent
Yam displays and harvest celebrations in the Trobriand Islands. Confirm dates and a Losuia flight before building a trip on it.

Think twice about
- Port Moresby on foot, day or night
The mandatory transit city carries the most serious crime picture in the country. Use a hotel with an airport transfer and stay in after dark.
- Alotau streets and coast road after dark
Raskol armed robbery and assault are a national risk with no Milne Bay exemption. Move by hotel-arranged driver after dark.
- Milne Bay battlefields off paths
Unexploded Second World War weapons are present in Milne Bay. Stay on paths with a guide and never touch or move any metal object or ordnance.
- Highlands Region and Panguna, Bougainville
The Highlands Region faces tribal violence and civil unrest, and the area near the Panguna mine on Bougainville faces civil unrest. Not on a Milne Bay route: do not route through them.

What to book ahead
- Battle of Milne Bay Battlefield Tour: a few days ahead
- Skull Caves: a few days ahead
- East Cape: a few days ahead
- National Kenu and Kundu Festival: months ahead
- Tawali Diving: Muck Diving and Deacon's Reef: weeks ahead

- Reconfirm the Port Moresby to Alotau flight the day before, every time, and never book a same-day international connection.

- Build a Trobriand leg only once a confirmed Losuia flight and a booked lodge exist, with slack days on both sides.
Is Milne Bay safe?
- Use hotel and lodge transfers and drivers they arrange. Do not walk around Alotau after dark, and do not walk in Port Moresby at all as a visitor outside a guided visit reached by secure transport.
- Comprehensive insurance covering medical evacuation and diving is essential: serious cases leave Alotau by air to Port Moresby or Australia.
- PNG is a malaria country, Milne Bay included: prophylaxis, nets and repellent from dusk, and test any fever promptly.
Milne Bay travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not assume a direct international flight to Gurney: no confirmed schedule was published in the sources for 2026 or 2027.
- Do not treat local boats as a ferry timetable: PNG small boats can be overcrowded and lack safety equipment.
- Do not touch wartime ordnance on land or on a wreck dive, and do not bargain village or landowner access fees down.
Getting around Milne Bay: public transport and more
- Fly Port Moresby to Gurney Airport, Alotau, about one hour, with a buffer night in Port Moresby at both ends.
- In Alotau use hotel transfers and hotel-arranged drivers and boats. Do not build a trip on public motor vehicles.
- By sea use whole-hired dinghies and banana boats in daylight and settled weather only, with the return agreed before boarding.
